Default Motor to Catalina on 2HP?

Would you try it,

No.

and what conditions?

Perfect or better.

What would you take other than obvious?

A bigger boat.

In good conditions the passage appears to be survivable in a small boat.
Small being a relative term. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_8lCa9-qoc

Jerky but interesting video.
I was gonna say...I'd have tried that voyage in perfect weather conditions
on my Sandpiper 565...very similar to the Potter 19.

That small sailboat is much more seaworthy than a jon boat:

1. Higher freeboard

2. Ballast and self righting ability

3. Water tight hatches/protection from down flooding

4. Secondary means of propulsion

5. Self draining cockpit

6. Protection from the elements

and the list goes on...

Agreed. Hence the caveat.

I have an aquaintance that grew up in the San Pedro area. He tells of
taking 14' O/B over to Catalina. Lot more HP than 2. Said his guardian
angels had to be doing a good job. As he survived. Jetskis make the trip
all the time, but at 40-50 mph, you are looking at less than an hour travel
31 miles from Alamitos Harbor to Avalon. We were planning on going over
last Monday for an overnight, but the winds told us no.

I went over by seaplane once (SA-16). Wonder if they're still running those
out of Long Beach or Terminal Island?

I think they are. When on the water during the week, heard the seaplane
calling for clearance.

That was a fun trip, and not too expensive. We came back by ferry and sat
with the older kid (Wally?) of 'Leave it to Beaver'. Fun trip and a nice
guy.
