Gore, U.N. panel win Peace Prize
The former vice president shares the Nobel prize with the climate change
committee. His citation says he's done the most to boost worldwide
understanding of the challenge.

Former Vice President Al Gore and the U.N.'s Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo today for
their campaigns against global warming.

"His strong commitment, reflected in political activity, lectures, films
and books, has strengthened the struggle against climate change," the
citation said. "He is probably the single individual who has done most
to create greater worldwide understanding of the measures that need to
be adopted."

Gore's decades-long crusade against climate change was captured in the
2006 Oscar-winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," which is seen as
a major force in shifting the debate from whether the burning of fossil
fuels is warming the planet to what should be done about it.

The Nobel Peace Prize is likely to increase calls for him to enter the
2008 presidential race, despite his insistence that he has no intention
of running.

Speculation that Gore might have won the honor picked up Thursday
morning after he canceled a last-minute trip to China to discuss global
warming with government officials there, which had led him to cancel a
fundraising appearance for Sen. Barbara Boxer. The fundraiser was
hastily rescheduled at San Francisco's Westin St. Francis Hotel, but
Gore gave no indication during the afternoon talk that he had won.

Looking relaxed, Gore delivered a 20-minute speech to more than 400
Boxer supporters reprising his call for a new bipartisan, international
approach to attacking global warming. He compared the issue with the
U.S. and European nations' approach to rebuilding after the ravages of
World War II — and the urgency behind such international crises as the
AIDs epidemic and Darfur.

"They're really moral imperatives disguised as political problems," Gore
said. "Our challenge is to see them in their true light."

After the speech, with Boxer at his side, the crowd erupted in a chant
of "Run, Al, run!" Gore responded by waving his arms sideways, hands
down, in a sign to cut off the cheer.

Only recently has global warming become a key political issue in the
United States.

Gore, 59, was one of the first politicians to call attention to the
issue, first as a Tennessee congressman and then senator in 1980s.

He ran for president in 1988, he said, largely to draw attention to what
he viewed as looming environmental catastrophe -- a platform that, like
his campaign, failed to connect with voters.

During the 1992 presidential race, Gore's views, encapsulated in his
book released that year, "Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human
Spirit," continued to be a dividing point.

As vice president, he helped negotiate the Kyoto Protocol to reduce
greenhouse gases. U.S. participation was stymied by the Senate, which
passed a resolution opposing any agreement that did not require
mandatory cuts for developing nations.

After losing the 2000 presidential race, one of the most controversial
elections in U.S. history, Gore refocused his efforts on the
environment. He updated his old slideshow presentation on global warming
and began showing it to audiences around the world. It became the basis
for "An Inconvenient Truth," which won the 2007 Oscar for best
documentary feature. His supporters have raised hundreds of thousands of
dollars in hopes that he can be persuaded to run for president again.

Earlier this week, the website draftgore.com ran a full-page
advertisement in the New York Times. "You say you have fallen out of
love with politics, and you have every reason to feel that way," the
letter said. "But we know you have not fallen out of love with your
country. And your country needs you now -- as do your party and the
planet you are fighting so hard to save."

Times Staff Writer Scott Martelle and the
Associated Press contributed to this report.

A terrific honor for Al and the United States.

And Bush, of course, will be recognized by the International Association
of Corporate Robberbarons for "Warmongering Under False Pretenses,"
while Dick Cheney will receive the trophy for "Best Bag of a Two-Legged
Predator while on a Canned Hunt."

Yep, and congrats to him for his award and commitment, regardless of whether
global warming is indeed, man induced.

It's ironic that had he been declared the victor in 2000, it is unlikely he
would receiving a Nobel prize today.

On the other hand, had Al been declared the winner in 2000, 9-11 might
not have happened, the world would have been been a better place, and
our national reputation wouldn't have gone done the toilet.

Speculation is so much fun.

I think 9/11 would have happened in any case, but be that as it may, I
wonder if Al is going to run for Prez.

I'll bet he's talked into it. Plus, he can't resist it.

If only to put it to the Clintons for basically abandoning him in

Gore. I'm sure you know of the gross erroneous claims in his cartoon, but
in case you've not seen them, here you go:

Now, back to boating. I'll be calling the factory today, just to make sure
the proper gauges are being put in the boat. The dealer and I discussed
this, but I'll call just to make sure. Thanks for the reminder.

You really should leave the stupid stuff on your home computer, or send it

which had, before Arafat, been considerable.

Global warming has quite a bit to do with boating. Weather, eh?
As for the rest of your comment, it's just sour grapes on the part of

A terrific honor for Al and the United States.

Yep, and congrats to him for his award and commitment, regardless of whether
global warming is indeed, man induced.

It's ironic that had he been declared the victor in 2000, it is unlikely he
would receiving a Nobel prize today.

Eisboch

Most republicans think that global warming isn't happening in any way,
man made or otherwise. Imagine how awful they must feel realizing that
someone won the Nobel prize for something they believe to be
fictitous.

This is the citation of the Nobel Committee:

"Indications of changes in the earth's future climate must be treated
with the utmost seriousness, and with the precautionary principle
uppermost in our minds. Extensive climate changes may alter and
threaten the living conditions of much of mankind. They may induce
large-scale migration and lead to greater competition for the earth's
resources. Such changes will place particularly heavy burdens on the
world's most vulnerable countries. There may be increased danger of
violent conflicts and wars, within and between states."

So, if I have this straight, Gore won for proselytizing a less than
universally accepted "scientific" theory which, presumably, has led to
action which prevented (or not) possible future competition for
resources, possible future conflicts, and future wars which haven't
happened yet and which may (or may not) ever occur because they are
only a possibility.

I think is a great precedent! If one can win a Nobel Peace Prize for
preventing events from transpiring which never actually would have
happened anyway, than I am your man.

Year 2050: Shortwave Sportfishing's posting of the first rec.boats low
transom thread is finally received by the residents of Omicron Perseii
VIII, saving the Earth from brutal annexation.

Gimme my prize!! You can keep the medal, just give me the million
bucks.

It's a pretty reasonable statement, as long as "precautionary principle" is
carefully considered, which of course nobody agrees on. The other extreme's
probably a lousy idea: Don't look, don't think about it, don't talk about
it.

It was a fair question, Eisboch. I mean, if you decided to try your hand
at
making sourdough bread, and your wife said "Don't forget the time you
tried
plumbing and flooded the basement", you'd probably wonder how her mind
made
that leap. The same thing is happening here. It's a stupid kneejerk
reaction
from a person pulling a word outta his ass with no idea what it means or
how
it applies to the situation (which it clearly does not).

I don't like communism or socialism, but that's not what this is about.

And, what's your brief definition of socialism ?
Explain as if you needed to say it in a short sentence
to a psychology class.

Nice try.

This is the intent of the Nobel Peace Prize as stated in Albert
Nobel's will establishing the Nobel Peace Prize.

"to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for
fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of
standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace
congresses".

There doesn't seem to be a lot of "precautionary principle" in that
statement for subjective climate change theory movies. :)

Thus, for saving the world from the domination of Omicron Persei VIII,
I gladly claim the prize because it may (or may not) happen. The
precautionary principle is that I may (or may not) save the world from
alien invasion fits perfectly.

Gimme my money.
