But they don't have a dhu. --Vic |

A Dhu is a Scottish elf or the Sword of Ali, the Fouth Caliph and son-in-law of Mohammed. :) The first I knew - the second I found. Google is the anti-Christ. |

It's called a Dhu. As in Dhufish. A Dhu is a Scottish elf or the Sword of Ali, the Fouth Caliph and son-in-law of Mohammed. :) The first I knew - the second I found. Google is the anti-Christ. I've been very interested in the Dhu elves for years, and can perhaps add to your knowledge here. The Scot legends of the Dhu elves, which somewhat predated the historical era Shakespeare used as a basis for "MacBeth", were always depicted in etchings as quite handsome, leading to a family near Dundeen taking the name Dhufact, which in the contemporary Dundeen dialect meant "handsome face." Some centuries of language change corrupted that to Dooface by the early 18th century. Circa 1840 the family had fallen into disrepute due to a few generations of criminality, mostly highway robbery. Duncan Dooface was the last member of the clan bold enough to carry the family name, and was arrested by the Laird of Kincaid in September of 1853, in a particularly stupid attempt to pick the pocket of the Laird himself. He went to the gallows in October of that year. His surname was mistakenly transcribed by the law clerk into the records. And so the word "doofus" came to be. No google needed. --Vic |
