Quality is a big issue with bait. Better bait, better bites. I always buy resturant quality squid and if I'm chunking clams or clam bellys, always buy them right off the bull rakers in the Bay. The rakers will give you a good deal too - better for them as they make more money and give you some primo bait. Can't beat quality bait. |

Quality is a big issue with bait. Better bait, better bites. I've used cheap squid, and I've used expensive squid. Neither has ever caught anything in the bay, unless it was dangling from a lure I was trolling. |

And in SoCal whole squid are referred to as Candy bait for White Sea Bass. And the fish prefer fresh or good quality squid as well as any other bait fish of good quality over dried, skanky bait. |

Smelly bait doesn't always attract fish - lobstas/crabs and such critters, yes including catfish. |

The bait stores around here don't have it. I wonder if 'Bonefish' restaurants use fresh squid. Hell, maybe they'd sell some. |
