Is it good form to remark about people who are known to the group but no longer actively involved- and therefore without opportunity to reply and/or defend themselves? Personally not sure, which is why my comment is phrased as a question. |

As you may know they were stuck in Joliet, Illinois for three or four days waiting for high water and strong currents to recede. Joliet is not exactly a garden spot and I suspect Doug decided to use that time for some historical research and writing. I actually found his account to be well researched and interesting, not unlike something our friend Chuck of the PNW sometimes indulges in. I'm probably a bit prejudiced however since I grew up in a canal town in upstate NY listening to the tugs and barges lock through during the night, and stopping on the bridge on the way home from school to watch the boats. We've also done a fair amount of very enjoyable canal cruising both in NY and Canada over the last 7 years or so. You get a wholly different perspective on otherwise familiar landscape. What's the over/under on Doug calling it quits and flying home leaving Kathy and Hank to bring the boat back? Not a chance in my opinion. He's been looking forward to this trip for a long time. Hopefully we'll get to meet them as they pass through SWFL on the return leg. |

I thought it was pretty intersting myself. It just struck me as odd in the middle of the trip. He's a pretty interesting guy. Wish I had the patience for that kind of trip. |

We'd get impatient if lock openings were delayed, same with bridge openings but that is less of an issue on the canals - big problem in FL however. The rest of it depends on the terrain and getting in the right mindset. Some parts are a lot more interesting than others. We were talking to people last week who had done the southern half of the great loop. They found the Tombigbee Waterway down through Tennessee and Alabama to be boring, mostly due to lack of interesting scenery. |

The boats are literally built to fit the locks. You do get to cruise by some really quaint olde villages along the way. It's a very laid back vacation from what I hear, eating and drinking your way through the English countryside. My English buddy did this a few years ago with the family. Said it was very enjoyable. |
