Interesting you should mention that since I just finished reading it
about an hour ago. As you may know they were stuck in Joliet,
Illinois for three or four days waiting for high water and strong
currents to recede. Joliet is not exactly a garden spot and I suspect
Doug decided to use that time for some historical research and
writing.

I actually found his account to be well researched and interesting,
not unlike something our friend Chuck of the PNW sometimes indulges
in. I'm probably a bit prejudiced however since I grew up in a canal
town in upstate NY listening to the tugs and barges lock through
during the night, and stopping on the bridge on the way home from
school to watch the boats. We've also done a fair amount of very
enjoyable canal cruising both in NY and Canada over the last 7 years
or so. You get a wholly different perspective on otherwise familiar
landscape.

What's the over/under on Doug calling it quits and flying home leaving
Kathy and Hank to bring the boat back?

Not a chance in my opinion. He's been looking forward to this trip
for a long time. Hopefully we'll get to meet them as they pass
through SWFL on the return leg.
