Default Placement of nav lights

I can't seem to find the damned rule regarding nav lights. I believe
having the red/green lights on the side is perfectly legal, but I'm
looking for a "source." The USCG site seems to be down here.

Anyone? Ferris? Ferris Bueller?

I like others have concerns about obstructions by passengers,
fishermen, mounting for covers, etc.. And being a small boater, the
other concern about vision distraction at night is very close to my
heart. It is about the most annoying problem you can have with lights
within line of sight. I did however notice a nice ridge on the
sheerline that would be perfect for lights mounted out of the way,
unobstructed, and out of sight. Just my opinon.
