Not entirely certain, but the noise prior to the impact had me wondering
if maybe this was staged. Wuld a returning projectile make that sort of
whistling sound? Anyone here have a .50 cal and can experiment and
report back?

I can't speak to a BMG round, but I've heard .50 cal black powder
rounds ricochet like that. It just depends on how the round distorts
when it initially deforms.

Probably a stone kicked up - I don't think it was the round or he'd be
dead even with a distorted bullet.

I found a pic years ago of a lucky Vietnam air-crewman.
It's over there with subject 'RICOCHET".
