Not entirely certain, but the noise prior to the impact had me wondering
if maybe this was staged. Wuld a returning projectile make that sort of
whistling sound? Anyone here have a .50 cal and can experiment and
report back?

Probably a stone kicked up - I don't think it was the round or he'd be
dead even with a distorted bullet.

I can't speak to a BMG round, but I've heard .50 cal black powder
rounds ricochet like that. It just depends on how the round distorts
when it initially deforms.

It looked like he was shooting straight down range, parallel to the
ground. That bullet is going to go a mile or more before it hits the
ground unless there was something right in front of him but out of the
camera frame. I am guessing that was what happened and debris from the
target is what came back. You can also get jacket pieces coming back
at you if you shoot ball ammo at a hard surface but they don't travel
very far back.


The berm he's shooting at looks to be MUCH closer than a mile, which is
pretty dumb for .50 cal shooting. And, take another look at the ground in
front of him as you hear the whistle. Whatever hit him tapped the ground
first.

Although it makes sense to use a support while tuning up a gun, I'm not
impressed with people who use one for target shooting. What are they
proving? That they've got a good table?

The bullet weight and design, amount of powder, type of powder, primer
used, and tweaks to the gun itself all affect accuracy. The only way
to judge what specific load is the most accurate is to take all other
variables out of the equation. A table rest is quite effective at
calming things down, but there's still differences in how accurate one
can be even while using a rest.

Besides, a .50 caliber is very heavy... heavier than a bag of
groceries. You may not be able to hit the side of a barn free-handing
one.
