One of the local guides had a canvas pro build this for his existing
bimini. It's really nice, and provides protection without having to have the annoyance of a tee-top. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...renclosure.jpg |

It's just a bimini, what's so cool about it? And, who's CamoDude? Any
guns on board? JR HK wrote: One of the local guides had a canvas pro build this for his existing bimini. That means it is a bimini that extends one's fishing season in cooler weather AND keeps one out of the rain when that is important. I've seen plenty of tee-tops with front and side curtains, but no biminis on center consoles rigged up that way. That's what's cool about it. Lots of us who have had tee-tops and biminis on open boats prefer biminis. I've had tee-tops on two center console boats and find them next to useless for providing shade from the sun. I have no idea who the camo dude is, and I have no idea if there are "guns on board." Why would either concern you? |

Oh, the fact it's an actual bimini, as opposed to a T-top. OK.
I swear, that guy looks EXACTLY like a GI Joe I had when I was a kid. JR HK wrote: JR North wrote: It's just a bimini, what's so cool about it? And, who's CamoDude? Any guns on board? It is a creative use for a fully enclosed bimini, but a fully enclosed bimini none the less. I guess I haven't seen one used this way before. |

![]() I had the same thought as you, what is so cool about it? It is a creative use for a fully enclosed bimini, but a fully enclosed bimini none the less. I guess I haven't seen one used this way before. I found it riddled with flaws, both in concept and execution, when compared to a T-Top. When the side and forward curtains are up, forward access is severely restricted, limited to walking the gunwales with only the wobbly bimini stanchions available for support. Not a great solution in seas. A roll-up zippered door in the forward curtain would alleviate this problem somewhat, but there is no evidence of one in the photo. In terms of execution, the side and forward curtains were cut too large, allowing a sloppy fit. While this makes the curtains easy to install, it allows for bends and wrinkles in the curtains after installation, making for poor visibility through the eisenglass. The curtains should have been finished so that they would stretch taught when installed. Even without the side and forward curtains, the bimini top is sub-par on a mid-sized open fishing boat like this one when compared to a T-Top. Unlike a T-Top the bimini stanchions get in the way when trying to walk a fishing line around the boat. Odd, since the ability to easily walk a fishing line around the boat is a key design benefit of a center console rig. Also, the bimini top offers no opportunities for antenna installation or overhead storage of gear or electronics, like a T-Top will. The only advantage to the bimini over the T-Top is that you can make it go away easily. |

Ahh, the beauty of a bimini is that it stores out of the way when you don't need a top, which, around here, is most days except the most brutally hot and sunny. If you need it, you open it up. And if you want to extend your season a tad or come back in the rain, the who rig takes just a couple of minutes to set up. And, instead of a tee-top that acts as a drogue when you trailer, and provides very little shade, you have something that provides shade when you need it. Also, when you put the full cover on your boat after you use it, you don't have to buy and use an ungainly cover with zippers that accomodates a tee-top. Obviously, there are downsides to such a top, but there are downsides to a permanently "up" tee-top, too. I've tried biminis and tee-tops, and I prefer biminis. The guide whose boat I have shown says since getting the bimini add-ons, he's been able to extend his paydays out on the water by nearly 300 trips over the past few years. |
