I have a windlass on my 1997 searay when i try and activate, it makes
a loud click sound, but does not engage either up or down. I also tryed remote (down only) switch on bow and it does the same thing. I removed the up/down switch on the dash to check the connections they are fine. The click sound seemss to be coming from behind the dash. Do these units have a silanoid or capacitor behind dash that could be failing? |

The click indicates the control system is operating. The power
supply/ground to the windlass motor is open, or the motor is puked. Found that i had powe at switch and motor but still not able to unlock windlass. I then manually loossened chain and winlass started to work. it would go up/down no problem but when the anchor tightened into the storage positon it started to click again like the motor did not have the power to get the anchor started. I loosened again and motor engaged.any ideas whats wrong |

Low voltage at the windlass motor due to a) bad connection somewhere; b) low battery level; c) burned solenoid contacts. 2. Mechanical problem in windlass, ie, motor, bearings, shaft seals, gear drive, etc. Start with the simple possibilities by measuring the voltage at the windlass when it is acting up. If low work backwards towards the battery. If the voltage is low at the battery also, then that is your problem. Otherwise, check connections for corrosion and check the solenoid for voltage drop across the contacts. Most mechanical issues will require a professional rebuild or replacement. |

Just to add, measure the voltage at the windlass motor while trying to activate it. The voltage could appear to be OK without the windlass electrical load applied. If it measures OK without activation, but low when trying to activate, bad battery or bad connection between the battery and the windlass motor is indicated. |
