Quiz time, Jim. Think about violence related to the manufacture, transport
and sale of alcoholic beverages. When is the last time you heard of that
kind of violence SPECIFICALLY related to booze?

The high cost of drug use is because it is illegal and the price is
artificially inflated to line the pockets of those in the manu. and distr.
of the illegal drugs. If they were not illegal, they could be sold for
less than alcohol.

The criminal eliminate would hate to see them decriminalize drugs, they only
make money because they are illegal.

I *DO* see the connection you mentioned. But, you must've been asleep in
high school when the math teacher was discussing set theory. The crimes you
mentioned are a subset of a larger category: drug related crime, in general.
This includes not just the crimes you pointed out, but also those committed
by people who sell drugs. Turf wars, for instance. This is how it relates to
prohibition, and this is why I asked you the original question. Much of the
violence exists because the stuff is illegal. This is why you have not heard
of THIS TYPE of violence related to alcohol.

Do NOT send this discussion off in another direction by pointing out that
crimes are sometimes committed because people are drunk. That has nothing to
do with the legality of the substance involved.

JimH cannot acknowledge the parallels because he would have to admit that

U.S. Coast Guard Makes Biggest Cocaine Bust in U.S. History

On Apr 24, 5:39?am, "Fred Garvin, Male Prostitute"

Who cares if someone is hurting themselves?

1. Spouse
2. kids
3. parents
4. friends
5. employer
6. employees
7. creditors
8. innocent drivers encountered in traffic

etc, etc, etc, etc, etc, etc

"My drug use (which includes the drug alcohol, btw) doesn't affect
anybody but me!" has to be one of the most selfish and shortsighted
statements of the modern era.

We all use drugs or chemicals of some kind for recreational purposes.
Maybe we enjoy the stimulation of a cup of coffee, the relaxation of a
bowl of pot, the rush of a sugar cookie, the taste of a good cigar,
the sweet semi-consciousness of heroin, or the general unwind
associated with the consumption of a few beers. Nearly any of those
vices can ruin your life and profoundly affect the lives of people who
love and depend on you. Some of them can so alter your motor and
perceptions skills that you should not be allowed behind the wheel of
a car or a boat. Some (like tobacco and other substances) so
profoundly alter the user's physiology that the body soon feels
abnormal when not being dosed with a specific poison.

I always find it particularly alarming when I am out on the boat and I
encounter a boatload of drunks (either out on the water or staggering
around a marina). There are so many additional hazards associated with
the marine environment that it's important to have your wits about
you. How many times a year do we see people operating a boat, often at
high speeds, with a bottle of beer in one hand and a steering wheel in
the other? Alcohol is the most abused drug in America and a factor in
an alarming number of boating accidents, deaths, and injuries each
year.

People will use most of these addictive products whether they are
legal or illegal. It's legal to buy rat posion, but few people are
going to run out and buy a box of it and start shoving it into their
mouth with a spoon as a result. Simply legalizing something doesn't
automatically increase consumption- and legalization could help reduce
the allure of various controlled substances among rebellious
youngsters.

We should legalize it all, tax it, and control it. Most of the crime
and violence associated with drug use doesn't occur because the drugs
make people criminal and violent (well, meth maybe) but is present
because we force addicts to do business with violent criminals who are
the current suppliers of many of our perferred addictive substances.

Most of the criminal activity and gang violence associated with the
distribution of liquor ceased when Prohibiton was repealed. The same
would likely prove true for cocaine, marijuana, opiates, etc.

A progressive country would supply addicted individuals as much
substance as needed while at the same time work with these individuals
to help them break the habit. That would be hideously expensive, but
at least a few people would be cured and we wouldn't be dealing with
the billions of dollars each year in social costs and incarcerations
associated with the use or illegal distribution of drugs. As it is, we
are paying all of the social costs without really curing anybody- all
the while maintaining an atmosphere where some of the most vicious
criminal elements in the world can wrack up billions of dollars in
profits. Some of this profit finds it way to Al Qaida and the Taliban-
particularly from heroin.

So hurrah for the USCG's interdiction of this coke shipment. Until we
change our failed policies associated with the "war on drugs",
treating drug addiction like a crime rather than a disease is the only
tool we have to work with. Darn poor tool it is, but it's the only one
in the box.

Meanwhile, boat sober.

It can be important to

Spouse
kids
parents
friends
employer
employees
creditors
innocent boaters encountered on the water

etc, etc, etc,

:-)

You didn't say anything about marketing distributors - you said
violence related to. Liguour stores are easy targets for robbers,
they certainly cater to alcohol abusers (which, despite academic
denials to the contrary is a big contributor to domestic violence) and
in general serve no further purpose than distributing a drug to the
general populace.

I might also point out that up until recently (say within the past ten
years or so), beer advertising, while not engaged in direct violent
imagery, certainly encouraged drinking to excess.

"The one beer to have when your having more than one" comes to mind
immediately - there are other examples.

Because drug use often results in crimes on others to obtain money to

Oh, you mean like what happened during alcohol prohibition? Ending
prohibition ended the crime associated with it.

Really?

Or do you mean that making illegal alcohol legal stopped the crime of
making and marketing illegal alcohol?

If so, wow - that's deep.

Genius level reasoning.

Quiz time, Jim. Think about violence related to the manufacture,
transport and sale of alcoholic beverages. When is the last time you
heard of that kind of violence SPECIFICALLY related to booze?

I'd say that the high incidence of drunk driving accidents and
associated mayhem and deaths, in addition to the health problems
associated with alcohol are pretty violent, wouldn't you?

So you endorse reinstatement of the 18th Amendment?

In a way I do, yes.

For instance, I would like to see life imprisonment for anybody
convicted of driving drunk (or impaired by other means/drugs) where a
life is lost. Minimum two year mandatory suspension of driving
privileges for first conviction of DUI. If you need a car to work,
tough - find a ride. If you drive for a living, find something else.

I could go on, but I won't.

Yes, but they have nothing to do with the marketing of purchase of
alcohol.
Unless you're hallucinating, you have not heard of liquor wholesalers
murdering each other to gain market share.

1) I shouldn't have implied marketing violence without being more specific
about it.

2) You and I should not continue this branch of the discussion. My intuition
says we're getting too close to something, and I understand completely.

Capisce?

Of course, the laws of supply and demand tell us that this seizure
will cause the street value of cocaine to rise, which of course
encourages traffickers to take even greater risks to bring it in, and
results in more increased crime as users attempt to support their even
more expensive habits. The inflated street value also leads to more
violent turf battles over dealing territory on the streets.

This is an observation, not an answer, and I certainly don't want to
take anything away from the hard work that the Coast Guard put in to
make such a large bust. It just seems like the war on drugs is like
running on a treadmill- no matter how hard you run, you never really
get ahead.

But cocaine seems to do in 6 months what excess alcohol takes 20 years to
accomplish. Some drugs need to be outlawed or at least controlled. Others,
such as pot, should be a free choice item. You can smoke it on private
property, but not on public property. That way, anybody affected is there
by choice. Would reduce the prison population a bunch, taxed, would add
lots of revenue to the state, and reduce the amount of law enforcement
manpower and money spend on the war on drugs. A war we have definitely
lost.

Of course, because nothing you wrote is relevant to the discussion of the
legality of the manufacture, transport, sale or consumption of any
particular substance.

I said in a way.

You restrict manufacture, transport, sales and consumption in the
fashion of expectations - I expect the use of it to be controlled by
modifying behaviors in the form of severe restrictions if the
substance is abused. We can compartmentalize until we're blue in the
face by isolating the production, marketing and sales of any substance
from the abuse of same, but the simple fact is that they are
inexorably linked - supply and demand.

The only way to alter that equation is to remove one - which to me,
would be the disciplinary actions to curtail use and abuse rather than
prohibit the production and sales. If you can't sell it, you can't
continue to make it.

To me, severe penalties for abuse would accomplish that.

The "hurting themselves" idea relates to whether certain drugs should be
illegal. Booze is legal, and assuming I didn't drive while drinking, I could
drink myself into a coffin without hurting anyone else (physically). My
brother in law did exactly that. I could also blind myself by using a bench
grinder without safety goggles, or make myself deaf by playing in my band
without hearing protection. Should power tools and drums be illegal?
