If 5hp would work for me I wouldn't hesitate to purchase the American
Built B&S that's so easy
on fuel and by far the most economical to operate of *any* outboard
engine. I recall all the skepticism
when B&S first intro'd their outboard by so-called *experienced people
in this newsgroup back in 2002 ..they
lambasted it as just an updated lawnmower version which it is
certainly NOT..ignorance was bliss back then.

From everything I've read..you'll be hard pressed to find a single

owner who isn't very pleased and if and when it's needs a part..B&S
will not
do what all other marine engine manufacturers do..hit you extremely
hard in the pocketbook and that
includes the original retail price. No, B&S has proven to not only be
an exceptional (half the price) value but
also backs their engines as good or better then anyone. I wish they
made a 15hp.

Holy moly! They're now makin' a 3HP electic outboard, too:

Although the weight of four 12v batteries is gonna be a minus...

No way! The wear & tear, & noise will kill you, and a Johnson/Evinrude
5.5/6 hp will use less gas & last decades longer.

Don't even think about carrying a B&S OVER brackish or salt water much
less use it in there. There is ZERO salt water operation protection...
so much inferior corrosion protection for/in any environ.

Their 5 makes more noise than a 15, and corrodes faster than a 50.

What a value. :-)

Don't use it in salt water so where's the corrosion issue? Can you
point to a white paper on this?

Value? $750 compared to $1500 for alittle more noise is an excellent
value
for the fisherman who likes to save alittle and still
have a 5 hp 4-stroke...B&S doesn't seem to have problems selling'em
and selling them
to experienced fisherman who can easily afford to pay double for some
other
makes..maybe the extra $800 goes into the 480x480 fishfinder/gps?

I should have mentioned B&S has 30,000 dealers so you can shop for
prices very easy.

Not personally, but I have a relative who bought one and the neighbor
across the street had one on his little tin boat for the lake.

Never do it again. Loud, noisy - basically a lawnmower engine on a
drive shaft.

They both went through two of them under warranty before they gave up
and called it a lesson learned.

The fuel efficiency is about what you would get with a lawnmower and
they are noisy as hell to boot - I can tell you that from personal
experience that ear plugs or shooting muffs are required equipment.

While it's true that parts for the engine are easy to purchase, don't
think that the drive shaft and gear box are worth anything - they are
cheaply built and under any kind of prolonged use, wear out or break.
Do'nt expect to hit anything under water and have the drive system
survive either.

In addition, while the engine parts may be readily available, it's not
true for the drive system. You also need to remember that you are
working with lawn tractor dealers who already have warranty
reimbursement problems with B&S. There is no margin built in for the
dealer - they make at most $30 an engine so don't count on rapid
service - it will most likely be when they can get to it kind of
thing.

You can find a decent small two stroke used for about the same money.

Save yourself the time and effort.

My neighbor at the lake has one. Too noisy and unrefined sounding for
my taste. There are several small outboards in our cove, and the B&S
is the only one that I notice and find annoying.
