If 5hp would work for me I wouldn't hesitate to purchase the American Built B&S that's so easy on fuel and by far the most economical to operate of *any* outboard engine. I recall all the skepticism when B&S first intro'd their outboard by so-called *experienced people in this newsgroup back in 2002 ..they lambasted it as just an updated lawnmower version which it is certainly NOT..ignorance was bliss back then. :) From everything I've read..you'll be hard pressed to find a single owner who isn't very pleased and if and when it's needs a part..B&S will not do what all other marine engine manufacturers do..hit you extremely hard in the pocketbook and that includes the original retail price. No, B&S has proven to not only be an exceptional (half the price) value but also backs their engines as good or better then anyone. I wish they made a 15hp. 06 Review from an old fisherman :) http://www.duckworksmagazine.com/03/...p/06/index.htm |

They're now makin' a 3HP electic outboard, too: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/dis...sp?DocID=76404 Although the weight of four 12v batteries is gonna be a minus... DT |

wrote: Does anyone have exp................ Not personally, but I have a relative who bought one and the neighbor across the street had one on his little tin boat for the lake. Never do it again. Loud, noisy - basically a lawnmower engine on a drive shaft. They both went through two of them under warranty before they gave up and called it a lesson learned. The fuel efficiency is about what you would get with a lawnmower and they are noisy as hell to boot - I can tell you that from personal experience that ear plugs or shooting muffs are required equipment. While it's true that parts for the engine are easy to purchase, don't think that the drive shaft and gear box are worth anything - they are cheaply built and under any kind of prolonged use, wear out or break. Do'nt expect to hit anything under water and have the drive system survive either. In addition, while the engine parts may be readily available, it's not true for the drive system. You also need to remember that you are working with lawn tractor dealers who already have warranty reimbursement problems with B&S. There is no margin built in for the dealer - they make at most $30 an engine so don't count on rapid service - it will most likely be when they can get to it kind of thing. You can find a decent small two stroke used for about the same money. Save yourself the time and effort. |

The wear & tear, & noise will kill you, and a Johnson/Evinrude 5.5/6 hp will use less gas & last decades longer. Don't even think about carrying a B&S OVER brackish or salt water much less use it in there. There is ZERO salt water operation protection... so much inferior corrosion protection for/in any environ. Interesting comments but contradicts some very positive reviews from
people who have actually owned of this little motor: http://reviews.basspro.com/2010/50120/reviews.htm |

Too noisy and unrefined sounding for my taste. There are several small outboards in our cove, and the B&S is the only one that I notice and find annoying. |

Starts easy, has lots of pep. It sounds a bit like a tractor motor rather than an outboard. At low rpm it does have quite a bit of vibration - you can feel the cylinder firing every other stroke (4-stroke). And I think it killed my Timex, it stopped ticking. But the price is right, considering that a comparable new outboard would cost...." Some people are too cheap for their own good. |

I don't about the B&S, but I bought a Sears air-cooled 5hp back about 1970. Used it for many years on fishing boats I rented in IL and WI. It cost about $150 instead of the $3-400 for a smooth Johnson or Evinrude. It was loud, shaky, and lousy for trolling, but it always started after only 10-15 pulls. I swore if it ever took me to twenty pulls I would sink it and get something decent. Sadly it always started. Sadly, I never felt good about clamping it on a transom, knowing the putt-put hell I was going to suffer when it started. You're right. --Vic |
