Default Missing San Francisco Sailor

Still haven't found the sailor or his boat or his boat debris?

So, the last thing we heard was that he called his daughter from his boat,
15 miles past the Golden Gate, on his way to the Farallon Islands where he
was going to scatter his wife's (his mother's?) ashes. The daughter said he
sounded in good spirits. He never returned and his boat has vanished.

So what happened?

Can you scuttle a sailboat without a trail of debris? Secure everything
loose on deck below decks and seal the cockpit from the inside. Open the
through hulls and sink the boat. I think it can be done. Why would he do
that? After 7 years he can be declared dead and his daughter can reap his
insurance benefit. Did he go down with his ship or seal it from outside
after opening the through hulls? Hiding from embezzelment or larceny
charges, yet to be discovered?

We're talking about a sailboat, so its doubtful that someone pirated the
boat and made a quick getaway. The initial search would have turned up the
boat.

Maybe he fell overboard and his boat sailed right on past the Farallon
Islands on autopilot and is still headed west? The initial search wouldn't
have covered territory much past the islands.

I'm just curious about what might have happened to this large sailboat and
accomplished sailor on a fair weather outing. It's the absence of debris
that makes me wonder how this boat seems to have just vanished without a
trace.

...boat seems to have just vanished without a trace.

Needless to say Bryan... there are many of us wondering what
the heck happened in this particular situation as well

One of the senior Coast Guard officers involved in the SAR ops
has stated he is just as mystified as the rest of us.

Roger Long started a thread in "Rec.Boats.Cruising" titled "Jim
Grey disappearance" that you may find interesting.

Best regards

He's been abducted by Martians. The sailboat
was vaporized by a small scale Illudium Q-36
Explosive Space Modulator.

Sadly, there was no Earth shattering kaboom.

Is it Gray whale season there? We had a few Gray whale attacks each year
in SoCal. These can easily sink a boat and the debris not be recognized
as from the boat when they wash on shore. I mean, paper plates are paper
plates.

Paul... I can't answer that. But maybe Jonathan a
San Francisco Bay local who views this news group will
bring us up to speed.

However... I do recall reading of an incident involving
one of Matson's southbound container ships wrapping a big
whale around their bow considerably North of Mr. Gray's
assumed location. I believe that incident ocurred the
day before the ill-fated departure of the "Tenacious".

Also our local news media has reported that the Mexican
Navy has indicated their awareness of the "Tenacious"
incident and will be on alert for any sightings.

Apparently there is some speculation that should the
vessel be under sail but adrift... so to speak... that
the currents and winds common for our general area out
at sea... would favor a Southern course possibly into
their region (Baja.
