Do you have a geiger counter?

Good luck, fella.

The bone scan was ok I guess - I'll have the
results tomorrow.

The radiation was interesting. It's a new technique
to treat severe inflamation and I have been having
hip problems.

Feels like my damn right hip is on fire. :)

That's where my brains are located dumbass. :)

My liver is in my skull - of course, some from my planet
would say that most humans have liver for brains, so I
guess that is a wash. :)

Sadly, I didn't fluoresce which is kind of a bummer.

I was hoping for my planetary government colors of magenta

Mrs.E. was treated with nuclear medicine to kill off a portion of her
overactive thyroid gland years ago.

I thought the whole thing was kinda interesting until the doctor "suggested"
that I sleep in a separate bedroom for a couple of days following her
treatment.

I'm reminded of Dr. McCoy (Star Trek), in a 20th century hospital (the

Heh, try getting that sort of treatment done and then drive in downtown DC.
I've heard tell of a bicycle cop stopping a guy. Seems a detector went off

Winter seems a prime time for health issues.
In my case it's my mother. She caught the bad flu going around and had to be
hospitalized for the 2nd time this year.
The family has agreed that it's time for a real nursing home. Up here
there's a bed shortage so you have to insist they keep her in the hospital
until they find room.
Otherwise it can take up to a year to find a spot.
note: gov't takes any pension income the senior has as payment. As of three
years ago, they don't try to confiscate any savings anymore.

Sorry to hear that Don. It is always a tough choice to send a loved on to
a nursing home. My mom spent her last 6 or so years in one.

Make sure a family member visits her often to make sure the staff is
attending to her properly.

In the US one must use up whatever savings and income they have before the
government picks up the tab. Any money transferred to a family member
within 5 years has to be used for payment to the nursing home.

Did she get a flu shot in Fall?

We were the only province in Canada still taking all the seniors assets
until the change.

Yes..she did have her flu shot last fall. The doctor will come to the house
a couple times a year to examine her. The $%$^% moved his practice into his
older home which isn't walker or wheelchair accessable. the trade off is he
sometimes shows up on Sunday nights if he feels like it.
He just stood mom up when she was home between hospital stays. My wife made
the appointment and we stayed around all day for nothing.
It can be hard to change family doctors here... but we do have some walk-in
clinics that can help.
Anyway, she seems to be at the point where she can't safely walk to the
bathroom alone anymore..and after some real bad cleanups my sisters & wife
convinced me a nursing home is safer. Sure do feel guilty though...telling
her she can't come home.... even if it's the best option.

Yep, a tough decision. While it will ease the physical strain you and your
wife were under while trying to attend to her you will have a new emotional
strain in making sure she is well attended to at the nursing home. Making
regular visits and letting the staff know you are there goes a long way to
that end!

BTW: Assuming the nursing home will be doing her laundry, make sure you
mark all her garments with her name, using a permanent marker.

The system here sucks. My brother and I had to really do
some fancy financial footwork to save what was left of
my Dad's legacy - damn nursing home people wanted almost
everything she had left meaning that "she" was required
to sell all his paintings and other art that he collected
and saved for years. They even wanted the collectables
he had from his time as Allis Chalmers and Hearst Newspapers.

We decided to invest the money and supplement the insurance
with us contributing to her care. We just weren't going
to just leave it alone.

We managed to save everything from the vultures.

It's a complicated question. Personally, I think the
system is built for profit and not necessarily care.

That's what I object to. In my Mom's case, we are actually
paying more to keep her comfortable and cared for which
is our obligation.

However, savings are one thing - raping the valuables is
entirely another.

I wonder what color I will be. :)
You feeling OK today? I haven't seen any bizarre posts yet.
No - I feel like crap, thank you very much.

Chemo today and it didn't go well.

I hate chemo.

~~ mutter ~~

However, tomorrow is another day.

Damn.......it sounds serious. I wish you the best of luck in getting
better and beating whatever medical condition you have Tom.

Always look on the bright side of life.

You have the key to life Tom!

BTW: I spent close to an hour in an MRI tube today. I have had
difficulty walking since the operation due to the loss of muscle control
in my calf and quad in my right leg. I am hoping that it is just
swelling on the nerves that is causing the problem.

Did they fuse the disc?

Had a friend who had a L4/5 disc hernia - took him
about a year to get completely better after a fusion.

No. They cut away the herniation.

Probably just swelling then. Takes a while.

My son-in-law is a orthopod and from what he tells
me, every back operation is a new experience.

Have you started PT yet?

The nerves went whacko about 8 weeks after my laminectomy and discectomy
and they continue to give me problems two years later.

My surgeon did not want in house PT knowing they need to justify their time
and would have me doing things he did not want me doing.

I do leg lifts from the sitting and lying position, as well as walking as
much as I can.............PT ordered by the surgeon and things I can do on
my own without a therapist at my side.

This MRI will tell the story on what is wrong............hopefully showing
that it is all due to inflammation from the surgery. ;-)

An EMG and NCV will tell a better story about what the nerves are doing.

Here's hoping your surgeon finds nothing physically wrong with your body.
Hopefully, he'll look at you after the MRI and say, "Mr. Hertvick, it's
just bad Karma."

That's fixable!

Jim you are your own best advocate, waiting for the doctors to do
something may result in the loss of nerve function and use of the leg.
If you don't push them to find a cause and then a course of corrective
action you will be the looser and not them. You will be limping home and
they will be driving their big huge luxury cars.

Your surgeon only sees surgical solutions. Your PC passes out pills and
referrals.

Believe it or not the best thing you can do now is weight training and
aerobic exercise. You need to find a competent PT who specializes in the
spine.

Please don't sit around waiting for someone to tell you to do something.
