Hows everybodys weather?
"Harry Krause" wrote in message ... Thanks. I'm totally bored with our treadmill. I wanted to find an old fashioned wood and steel rowing machine, the kind they used to have at the "Y" when I was a kid. Separate wood oars. Don't like the new rowing machines much. I hear you on the treadmill. I started getting bored using it everyday and wanted to add another machine for cardiovascular workouts. I looked at rowing machines and stationary bicycles, but was advised by a knowledgeable trainer that neither did what an elliptical does in terms of a productive workout. The combination is working out good. I don't mind the treadmill because it's a break from the elliptical and visa-versa. Use weights for strength workouts. You don't need a big set of barbells ... you can get a set of the small, dumbells and design upper body workouts using them. BTW ... I also do 100 crunches a day on the ABS chair with a small, 8 lb handweight behind my neck. The results of all those Sam Adams come off slowly. Eisboch Eisboch |

Which treadmill did you get? -- ***** Have a super day! ***** John H The treadmill is an older, commercial gym type (CRX) that was in the house when we bought it. It's not as up-to-date as some of the newer ones, but is rugged, inclines to 10 degrees and calculates speed, calorie burn rate, etc. I bought a Sole elliptical and use it as well because even with a wall mounted TV, the same workout can get boring if you use the same machine all the time. Ellipticals are a relatively new product for Sole, but they have been making treadmills for home and commercial use for many years. They are the exclusive supplier to Hyatt hotels. "JLH" wrote in message ... Is it possible to read while using the elliptical? -- Not really. Your hands and arms are occupied in the workout as well ... a vertical rowing motion. There are some ellipticals that have a built in video monitor/tv in the console. Quite frankly, when I am at the peak of the resistance curve, I am huffing and puffing and concentrating on getting through the workout. Eisboch |

"Eisboch" wrote in message . .. "JLH" wrote in message ... We're not that cold, but it's not going to break out of the 30's very often in the next couple weeks. That's too cold for boating and too cold for golfing. I wish I had a treadmill! -- ***** Have a super day! ***** John H Speaking of treadmills ... get one! Since giving up the Florida winter snowbirding, I was very fearful of another cold, wet winter and the depression that it causes. The boats are on the hard (well, the GB is ... the Navigator is in wet storage), the cars are stored away and the motorcycle's in the barn with a battery maintainer on it. So ... on October 23rd I decided to start a long overdue personal upgrade. Like many, the pounds had crept up, too many years sitting behind a desk had made me soft and the decline was starting to accelerate as the time went by. After doing a lot of Internet research, I committed to a serious diet and exercise routine on that date. The diet is more than simply watching calories ... I've done a bunch of research on what constitutes "healthy" eating and was somewhat shocked. I always thought I ate healthy ... just too much. I was wrong. Anyway, almost three and a half months later, I've dropped 50 pounds. I use a treadmill and/or an elliptical machine everyday for a cardiovascular workout and do heavy weightlifting routines every other day. I log and track everything in an Excel spreadsheet and it's fun and rewarding to look back a month or so and see the progress. Since January 1st I've done over 80 miles on the treadmill/elliptical at an increasing speed and incline or resistance level. The weight lifting is fantastic exercise but must be done carefully. I do 3-5 sets of various multiple rep workouts using enough weight on each to just about bring the muscles to failure. Each day though, the number of reps increases, so more weight has to be added. The downside is that I've had to go buy a completely new wardrobe. My old Levis and Dockers fall off. I've dropped three waist sizes. I haven't felt this good in 30 years. Surprisingly, it only takes an hour or so a day. I am getting close to my final goal weight wise, and have slowed the decline by adding more daily calories for a "soft landing". I'll always continue the exercise routines. I even invested in a new, Trek Hybrid road bicycle which I'll use when the warmer weather arrives. Feels good. Eisboch That does it. I'm going down to the basement and remove the tv and other stuff stored on top of my PaceMaster treadmill. The dog does get me out more often but the wife & I take turns on the 6 or 7 walks each day. |

Believe it or not, the experts say all you need is 30 minutes of walking at a brisk pace, 3 or 4 times a week to maintain your cardiovascular health and weight. Exercise by itself is not very efficient if your goal is to lose weight because it takes a lot of exercise to burn 3500 calories. But exercise is very important for other reasons, including maintaining your current weight. To lose weight you need both exercise and diet. Eisboch |

The only thing wrong with the room is that it was unused for the last 6 years. When people came over for the first time they walked into the gym room then looked at my Sam Adams belly and laughed. :-) Eisboch |

Let us know how your sister is doing once you get in touch with her. Thanks Jim, Well, I finally got though to her house, and got their answering machine, which I felt was a relief. That means that they had power, and at least the machine wasn't ripped out of the wall. I just talked to her about a half hr. ago. She her husband and son are doing fine. Fortunately for them the storms were north fo them. Don't know how far, but at least they're safe. |

"Harry Krause" wrote in message ... Which model did you buy? Upside, downside? I think it's an E-25. About a thousand bucks. It's not as described on the Sole website though, in that it has 20 levels of resistance (web site says 16) and also has the heartrate monitor feedback programs. They are rated very highly in the reviews. It's very quiet and smooth compared to some others that I tried before purchasing. The only downside so far was simply getting used to it. I'd say I have a moderate user program that I use .... resistance increases from about 7 to 13, levels there for a while, then decreases again. After 30 minutes I am sweating bullets. One thing I learned. You need more than the minimum resistance programmed, otherwise your legs start going a mile a minute. You can also reverse the direction of your leg movement, but I haven't tried that yet. Eisboch I use an older version of this: http://www.precor.com/cons/en/efx/521i/ found at a used sports equipment place for about $1200. It's easy on my bad knee (torn ACL and meniscus cleaned out) yet gives a good workout. A session is up to about 45 minutes with resistance at 17/20 and 600-700 Calories burned. The backward motion is a nice change at times and does work different areas. I recently discovered how easy it is on the joints and connective tissue, perhaps too easy. While in Florida I took a long jog on the beach. The next day my legs were noticeably sore localized only where the muscles attached. Apparently those points were not adequately conditioned for the 'shock' of jogging on sand. I do enjoy being able to read while exercising. It really makes the time fly by. -rick- |
