Anybody here ever have their hulls soda blasted?

According to somebody I just talked to, I can have the Ranger done for
less than a 1/4 of that price if it's soda blasted and you don't have
to worry about the gel coat getting screwed up.

Any thoughts?

what model is your Ranger, Tom?

Nice boat, Tom!
No, I'm not familiar witht he soda blasting process. I'm not sure if
anyone in my area does it, so I wouldn't know who to contact to find
info on it.

but according to this ACE advertisment, it's harmful to paint:
http://www.ace-sandblasting.com/soda...g-article.html

maybe it depends on the gun tip and pressure used.

hmmm,

http://www.sodablast.ca/app/soda.php

"...Substrates that can be baking soda blasted include but are not
limited to aluminum, stainless steel, brass, brick, concrete, cast
iron, copper, fiberglass, some plastics and more.

Typical applications include the following examples:

- effectively removes algae, carbon, dirt, fat, grease, oil, paint,
soot, char and more.
- automotive paint removal
- marine antifouling removal / antifouling surface preparation on
boats..."

Did you ever determine whether that hull was overweight or
not? Just curious...

I had two muscle cars soda blasted, in the hands of a skilled blaster
he can take just the top layer of paint off. I was able to see the
original paint job on the cars. It also leaves the surface almost ready
to re-apply the primer

It is by 500 lbs. However, we can't find where the weight comes from
- there's no water in the boat - at least not 76 gallons of it.

So, nothing for it but to add a couple of leaf springs and go from
there.

Must be 76 lbs of paint.

Here is a photo of them removing bottom paint with SodaBlasting.
