I was guessing that was you, as I read your dolphin report when you were heading down to the Keys. I was in a 30' Grady White heading SE into a nasty quartering sea at 26 knots. The boat handled it well, but I was throwing a helluva lot of water. My starboard side eisenglass was soaked and salt encrusted, and I picked you up on radar long before I saw you. When you were off my stern, I thought I recognized the boat. I didn't know the name of your vessel, or I would have tried to hail you on 16. I'd imagine that your vessel didn't even feel the seas...especially with them at your back. Yes, it got windy yesterday late in the afternoon. We were going downwind in a 60,000 lb displacement hull with active stabilizers so it was pretty much a walk in the park for us. We had plenty of bad road to negotiate over the course of the week however. A week ago last Friday we were going from Marco Island to Key West with a 20 to 25 kt easterly and nasty little 4 to 6 ft waves on our port beam. We took a few of the worst rolls that I've experienced in 3 years, and that includes thousands of miles on open ocean. The shape of the waves matters just as much as the height if not more so. Last Saturday morning we headed north out of Key West into 20 kt northerlies with a stiff opposing current generating some 5 foot square waves. We were bucking that most of the day until we got closer to Cape Sable. Nice day but not a fun ride. If you think you see us again, make a call to the "south bound Grand Banks trawler off of Naples" or whatever. It's possible we may get down that way again this winter but I don't know for sure. |

We were bucking that most of the day until we got closer to Cape Sable. Nice day but not a fun ride. I went out about 20 miles on Saturday with those northerlies at our starboard side. It wasn't too bad until we made it out 10-15 miles or so. Closer to shore, Sanibel was blocking the wind. We were going to go 40 miles, but 20 miles in that slop was enough with 4 kids aboard. NOAA called for 10-15 knots and seas 2 feet or less. Instead, the wind was closer to 20 knots with seas of 3-5 feet. 3-5 foot chop spaced a couple of seconds apart in shallow water makes for a bumpy ride. If you think you see us again, make a call to the "south bound Grand Banks trawler off of Naples" or whatever. It's possible we may get down that way again this winter but I don't know for sure. Will do. |
