OK... let's stop the Chuckie dots.....
Chuckie dots are a special service, sponsored by the cross posting jerks from other newsgroups who lob in such worthy subjects as "Deranged Mestizo Illegal Imigrants Rape Blonde White Woman on the Hood of a Lowrider", "Blacks are unfit to breathe", "Jews are infiltrating the government at every level!", etc. Replacing the racist or radical political crap with a dot makes it harder for the guy who normally posts in some other NG to find his handiwork when he checks in with rec.boats to see how many hundreds of responses and how much hateful name calling he has generated. There are several posters who do not participate in most of the normal exchange on the NG, but never fail to show up and make some nasty contributions to heated, offensively OT threads. If they don't see "Let's go shoot some n***ers and liberals" on the subect line, there's a better chance they will go on to scan some of the other NG's where they look for this type of content. If Gene's filter (and according to some in this thread there is some doubt whether it really is Gene) is kicking out the dotted subject lines, it would be really surprising to me to learn that Gene's filter wouldn't kick out the entire thread, anyway. If the original message was not posted by Gene, then it must have been posted by somebody with a different motivation for seeing the racist (etc) thread titles here. Changing the subject line to a punctuation mark might screw up a post. Posting KKK propaganda to a boating newsgroup screws up the entire group. An individual post from the KKK isn't as damaging as the group of people that such material routinely attracts. And anyway, by the time somebody changes the subject line to a punctation mark the post is already in the NG. People seeking this sort of radical crap can simply look for the punctuation mark in the subject line, go up thread a post or so, and read all of the hateful, racist, or confrontationally political trolls they would ever hope to find. |

You're presupposing that the only person who would want to shoot a n***er or a liberal would be a conservative, or that any conservative would subscribe to such an ideal. I don't know a single conservative who would actually shoot, or seriously threaten to shoot a liberal. Do you? Extremism cannot, by definition, be "conservative". Right wing extremists responsible for posting much of the divisive, racist, poison so commonly seen any more are hardly the "conservatives" with which you and a high percentage of other Americans self identify. I wouldn't call that gang of murderers in Texas responsible for dragging that randomly selected black person down the road behind their pickup truck "conservatives". Folks who gun down doctors outside of abortion clinics are hardly conservative. Nor should anybody look at the worst excesses of the radical left (eco-terrorism, etc) and attempt to make a case that such behavior typifies all "liberals." Could it be that your pre-awareness of my admitted bias is prompting you to be ultra-senstitive? |

My reference was to people who don't ordinarily participate in the NG but who seem to show up to participate in threads that are racist in nature or feature other subjects more often associated with right wing extremism. Therefore the comment was not directed to anybody normally part of the "group" here. Not that there aren't left wing extremist OT threads as well- but it seems that our homegrown lefties run for most of the yardage there. Darn few people we have never heard of before follow the left wing extremists into the group. By way of example, there were 4-6 people in that absurd "Gould is a Jew!" thread (as if that would be an insult even if it were true) a few months back that had never appeared in rec.boats or hadn't been heard from for months and months prior and haven't been heard from since. I think many conservatives are fine people who have thoughtfully evaluated the issues and simply reached some different conclusions than I have. We'll need to wait for history to show who's right, and by then we'll all be dead anyway and it won't matter much. Of course, history will ultimately prove the conservatives right on some issues and liberals right on others. It's true that I can be an insensitive *******, but I'm not out to tarnish conservatism. All seems to be well, though a relative was working in a health centre near where the child was crushed by the falling wall in north London. As the staff know the family well, eveyone was rather upset. I am not going to say any more out of respect for their confidentiality other than to say they are in our thoughts. On a lighter note, I haven't recived any nastygrams from the Marina and this webcam loking out over the Thames estuary in the general area looks fairly calm at the moment: http://www.iossc.org.uk/weather/ so all should be OK with the yacht. I am down there tomorrow to do maintenance. I'm mighty glad I picked up the permanent shore lines from our previous marina just after Christmas and put them on a fortnight back. They are extremely heavy three strand with spliced eyes and well covered with reinforced plastic hoze to prevent chafe. We were thinking about hauling out for the winter but I think in view of the number of yachts which have been toppled this year, even though we've moved to a less exposed marina, we'll stay in apart from a brief haulout for essentials like antifouling and anodes. Got a work party on down my local sailing club on Sunday, I wonder what chaos We'll find in the dinghy park. :-( -- Ian Malcolm. London, ENGLAND. I just talked to a friend in the Netherlands. They lost a couple trees in their garden, but no damage to property. -- ***** Have a super day! ***** John H |

On a lighter note, I haven't recived any nastygrams from the Marina and this webcam loking out over the Thames estuary in the general area looks fairly calm at the moment: http://www.iossc.org.uk/weather/ snip... Looks like a nice spring day to me! Here's our harbour buoy info...although we've warmed up dramatically from the -18C we suffered through for a couple of days. My hot water to the upstairs bathroom had frozen for a day. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=44258 |

Rub salt in the wound why don't you? ~~ mutter ~~ Well, you and Mrs Wave are always welcome to come visit. The weather this week in Key West has been absolutely magnificent, but we're headed home tomorrow. |

Wayne,
I was coming into Wiggins around 3pm today and saw a Grand Banks heading north between 3 and 5 miles from shore. Was that you? "Wayne.B" wrote in message ... We were abeam of Wiggins Pass at 3:12 PM and exactly 3.95 NM off shore. It looks like you probably saw us because there were no other north bound boats any where near by. I usually run closer to shore than that but decided to straight line it from Marco Island to Ft Myers Beach to save time. We spent last night anchored in Little Shark River. Tides were extremely low this morning when we were leaving, and the channel there was at least a foot shallower than charted depths. Lucky we got out before noon time. |

I was guessing that was you, as I read your dolphin report when you were heading down to the Keys. I was in a 30' Grady White heading SE into a nasty quartering sea at 26 knots. The boat handled it well, but I was throwing a helluva lot of water. My starboard side eisenglass was soaked and salt encrusted, and I picked you up on radar long before I saw you. When you were off my stern, I thought I recognized the boat. I didn't know the name of your vessel, or I would have tried to hail you on 16. I'd imagine that your vessel didn't even feel the seas...especially with them at your back. |

We were going downwind in a 60,000 lb displacement hull with active stabilizers so it was pretty much a walk in the park for us. We had plenty of bad road to negotiate over the course of the week however. A week ago last Friday we were going from Marco Island to Key West with a 20 to 25 kt easterly and nasty little 4 to 6 ft waves on our port beam. We took a few of the worst rolls that I've experienced in 3 years, and that includes thousands of miles on open ocean. The shape of the waves matters just as much as the height if not more so. Last Saturday morning we headed north out of Key West into 20 kt northerlies with a stiff opposing current generating some 5 foot square waves. We were bucking that most of the day until we got closer to Cape Sable. Nice day but not a fun ride. If you think you see us again, make a call to the "south bound Grand Banks trawler off of Naples" or whatever. It's possible we may get down that way again this winter but I don't know for sure. |

It wasn't too bad until we made it out 10-15 miles or so. Closer to shore, Sanibel was blocking the wind. We were going to go 40 miles, but 20 miles in that slop was enough with 4 kids aboard. NOAA called for 10-15 knots and seas 2 feet or less. Instead, the wind was closer to 20 knots with seas of 3-5 feet. 3-5 foot chop spaced a couple of seconds apart in shallow water makes for a bumpy ride. If you think you see us again, make a call to the "south bound Grand Banks trawler off of Naples" or whatever. It's possible we may get down that way again this winter but I don't know for sure. Will do. |
