This is a boating discussion forum.
My guess is that there are less than 30 actual boaters at this site,
and another 25-30
wannabe's or hang-arounds. Your odds of stirring up a market for your
boat agency would be a lot higher using a commercial buy/sell site.
Notice a lot of "for sale" notices in the subject line of the group?
There's a reason for that.

Please stick around if you can add some boating content (aside from
"I've got this neat boat for sale......").

There used to be a rec.boats.marketplace. If it's still functional,
that would be the place to take your inventory and price sheet.

Well travelled individual he is. In the past 2 years he has lived in
India, California, and Phoenix AZ. He sells mortgages in CA and AZ. He
solicits for real estate investments in India, He solicits for off

I find that curious. 25-30 wannabes? Do you really think that many
people that don't own boats hang out here?

I think that there are fewer than that. Maybe 5 to 10 non-boaters.

I'd also wager that there are a couple of "regular" posters that you
think are really boaters that are not. Some that you carry on
conversations with on a regular basis.

Before some of the non-boaters show up, let me say... I own a boat.
Was on it Saturday. The weather is nice in SC.

I'm heading down there this week to close on a house at the lower end
of Lake Moultrie.. I'm looking forward to checking out the winter
fishing scene down there.

So, as it happens, I have a couple of questions.

How is the Santee Cooper lake system fishery this time of year?
Active, non-active? Species? How about the Charleston area?

Oh, does the State support open launch ramps or are they mostly
private?

Tom, I've only been on Lake Murray and Lake Thurmond (AKA Clark's
Hill), so I can't help you with Moultrie.

From the website www.sclakes.com
"Moultrie is the sister lake to Lake Marion owned by the utility
Santee Cooper. Moultrie is 60,400 acres and is connected to Lake
Marion by the Diversion Canal. Moultrie is located in the lowlands of
the state near Charleston South Carolina. The lake's large oval shape
and huge width can draw high winds creating high seas type conditions.
The world record channel catfish came from these waters in 1964, and
the state record black crappie was caught here in 1957. Fishing guides
are available at this lake. Although not as many as Lake Marion, there
are plenty of campgrounds, marinas, restaurants, places for lodging,
and boat ramps. There is no state park on the lake, but the closest
state park is Old Santee Canal State Park."

Lake Murray is owned by SCE&G, and has a few public boat ramps, along
with several privately owned marinas. I suspect that Moultrie will be
similar. As far as fishing, again from the same website:

Lake Moultrie:

Largemouth Bass: Slow. Try plastic worms deep.
Striped Bass: Good, fishing live herring off the bottom, trolling
Stretch 25s or jigging Flex-It spoons.
Crappie: Slow. Try minnows around fish attraction areas.
Catfish: Excellent, using cut bait, shiners and nightcrawlers.
Bream: Slow. Try red-worms around public fish attractors.
Shellcrackers: Slow. Try red-worms around public fish attractors.

You'll like Charleston. Lots of history, great food.

Thanks. I really don't have any contacts down there.

I'll hunt around for guides and see what I can scare up for a short

You'll like Charleston. Lots of history, great food.

Loved Charleston when we were down there this summer. Had a great
time. I fished the rip off Fort Sumpter with a guide out of
Charleston and had a blast - couldn't get over the quality of the
speckled trout we were catching on white shrimp imitations.

My youngest boy is a State Trooper working the Orangeburg/Calhoun
counties so that's pretty much why we're moving down there.

Plus, I hate being without a boat in the winter. :)

We have a little bit of winter here, but not a lot, and not for long.
Saturday it was 70, and it's supposed to be 60 or better all week.
We'll have a couple more cold snaps before spring, but rarely does it
go more than a couple of weeks without warming back up.

Just be prepared... on the rare occasion that we get 1/2 inch of snow,
everything shuts down. There's no salt trucks, snow plows, or snow
tires. Everyone freaks. It's pretty funny.

Tell your son that if he sees a blue Boxster, it is not to be stopped
and ticketed. :-)

Me, too. I really dislike the part of I-95 that runs through Virginia.
It's the most dangerous part of the road, vehicular-wise. I don't like
the SC portion because of all the crime that takes place at the stops
along the route.

All of the transient traffic along 95 coupled with the very rural
setting creates a "safe" place for petty crimes to be committed bythat
traffic. However, it's no worse in SC than in any other similar area
95 runs through. It's all the criminal element transporting drugs and
cash up from Florida to the east coast using 95 that's the problem.

Nobody in SC wants to live close to 95.

My guess is that there are less than 30 actual boaters at this site,
and another 25-30 wannabe's or hang-arounds.

Hi.... I'm not a boater, I just play one on TV!

Oh wait, I meant I'm a boater but I play the part of a lurker in here.

Way cool but they are thirsty little fellows and don't have as much
liveaboard cruising room. Mostly they are designed for three or four
people to go offshore fishing for a few days. We looked at a bunch of
Hatts before getting the GB49. The best part was the obligatory
climb up the tuna towers. :-)

Yeah they are and I've looked at a couple - the fuel economy, or lack
thereof, scares me a little. I'm trying to be somewhat economical
about the fuel thing - not because of cost so much as just the thought
of burning through 300/400 gallons of diesel just for a fishing trip.

That's one thing that I would probably not opt for.

To be honest, I'm probably going to end up with another Contender or
similar boat.

Cheaper to just buy the wife and a companion lots of cruise trips.

What size boat are you thinking of buying?

It will definitely increase your "cost per fish" to well above market
price. :-)

We were following a nice looking 50+ Viking sportfish through a slow
speed area yesterday as we were coming home from the weekend. I got a
real adrenaline rush watching him accelerate up onto plane at the end
of the speed zone. There were a *lot* of horsepower at work as he
came up out of the hole in no time at all. Very impressive.

Ibet what ever engine[s] he had on board were pushing that diesel fuel
though the injectors, like giant hydrolic rams!

And they are really good looking boats.

I'm afraid that my search will become an avocation at some point.

And to add to my problems, I really want something with outboards
which is going to be a problem.

I don't know - we'll see.

Does your wife want a "floating condo" so she can enjoy weekends on the
lake? If so, on the larger lakes it is common for people to own two
boats, one for living aboard, and then a bass boat or center console for
fishing or a runabout for water toys and sking. Unfortunatley, those
boats that are great for living aboard, normally do not make good
fishing boats.

Yes, but the term "Bluewater Battlewagon" is a common term among
offshore fisherman, it is not Chuck's.

Mrs. Wave wants a "cruiser".

Mr. Wave wants another fishing machine.

I'm looking for a compromise boat which seems to be an impossible task
leaving me with either (1) having a boat custom built which would be
ridiculous in terms of cost or (2) buying one or the other.

Try to find a good Hatteras 55 sportfish. That was the only sportfish
we looked at that also had truly decent cruising accomodations.
Unfortunately it was just a tad too big to fit comfortably on our
dock, and the fuel burn was up around 3 gals per mile with its 12V71
turbos.
