I suppose you think the world is only around 6000 years old, huh? Or do you not belive in the bible? Boating related slant on your discussion: Do you realize that the Bible is not a single book? It is a library of books. If you went down to the public library to learn about, say, boat handling you might find one book that describes how to launch a cartop kayak and select the proper paddle. You might find another that says you will need a crew of 60 to properly set the sails, and still another that describes sailing single handed. You might find another that describes coordinating the port and starboard engines when manuevering a power boat, and yet another that describes how to manuever with a single screw. Are all of these books "incorrect" because they contradict one another? Is all of the information in the library invalid because different people at different times and from different perspectives wrote about a variety of aspects of boat handling? Of course not. An informed person would realize that trying to apply the literal instructions for sailing a 19th century frigate, paddling a kayak, operating a sailing dinghy, or bringing a twin screw Bayliner to the dock to a different situation or even simultaneously on any single vessel would result in disaster. Yet each book in the library could easily expand a reader's total awareness of boat handling, and all are true and useful within their specific frame of reference. Simply because some books in the library come to different conclusions than other books in the library or address the same topic from different perspectives, that would hardly be a valid reason to dismiss any of the books or the entire contents of the library as bogus. Your reference to Genesis, for example. I absolutely believe that the Genesis cosmology accurately reports how an ancient people expressed their interpretation and understanding of a creative force in or for the universe. There is a lot to be learned from that, but (IMO) the lesson has been wasted on those who glean nothing more than some belief that the earth is only 6000 years old or that life as we know it in this current era emerged during a period of seven rotations of the earth. |
