Personally, I'm pleased with the results, but ... as I read the tea leaves, this wave was against Bush, not necessarily for the Democrats. The Democrats had better heed that. One thing I found very encouraging were the exit polls that had corruption very important in the eyes of the voter. While I consider this administration the most corrupt in my lifetime, I wasn't sure other voters saw it that way. Also, while I consider myself well to the left of center, democracies should be run from the center. It was nice to see the right wing get spanked. We can only hope the enlightenment will provide for some true bipartisan effort. Perhaps we can now begin to repair our world relations, balance our budget and restore some sanity to our country. Batten down the hatches. Even if Pelosi honors her pledge not to seek
impeachment (and she *should* honor the pledge and not drag the country through that pointless, divisive mess again) we're about to redefine ugly government. Woah. The political animosity in this country during the next two years is going to make the last 8 seem like church supper. Too damn bad. If each side is so fricking "right" about all of these issues, you'd think we could craft arguments that would stand on their own without all of the emotional name calling and hysterical rhetoric. I see no evidence that's the case, on either side, and I don't hold out much hope for change anytime soon. Political discourse in this country assumes the average American has a sixth grade education and an IQ of about 70. :-( (This will be my sole political comment to rec.boats regarding the 2006 elections. My apologies to one and all for mounting the soap box......) |

I said, the Republicans claim to cut taxes. They don't they just shuffle money around to make it look like they do. In the case above, some taxes were cut. Then the money from HOPE was used in place of those taxes, weakening what the HOPE grant was for. So, the GA Govt. wasn't spending less because of the tax cuts, they were just stealing the money from the HOPE grant. SO, what will happen to the people who were supposed to get the HOPE grant and can't? Why, the GA govt. will give them different grants and loans. Where will this money come from? Taxes. It's really pretty simple, I'm surprised you don't understand it. |

If you got a bigger paycheck because of tax cuts, but spent more because of the the inflation that it caused, that's somehow a good thing? What a dolt. Hasn't inflation been pretty tame for a while now? Tame compared to what? Everything is relative, you know. Did you ever understand the lottery/taxes situation that is occuring here in GA? Hasn't inflation been pretty tame for a while now? Tame compared to what? Everything is relative, you know. Did you ever understand the lottery/taxes situation that is occuring here in GA? The GA Hope Scholarship still provides tuition to B students. "The HOPE Scholarship is one of the most popular programs in Georgia history. It has made an investment ofover $3 billion in scholarships for over 900,000 Georgia students and has encouraged academic achievement along the way. And for the first time, the best and brightest of our students stay in Georgia for their college education and then remain in Georgia to create new businesses. And it was created by Democrats. But some did not have the forward-thinking leadership to see the promise of the HOPE scholarship. Gov. Sonny Perdue and Lt. Governor candidate Ralph Reed fought the HOPE scholarship tooth and nail. State Senator Perdue voted against HOPE at least 3 times over his career.1 In typical Gov. Perdue fashion, he is trying to rewrite his record on HOPE. Now he supports it...or so he says. But he robbed HOPE of an astonishing $1.7 million to pay for a website2 the Athens Banner-Herald called "a campaign commercial." That was in 2005. But this is 2006, an election year. So he wants you to think that he is a big HOPE supporter. Gov. Perdue really hopes that you'll just forget about his record. Georgia has HOPE because Democrats had the vision to support education in innovative ways. And Democrats have the vision to keep the promise of HOPE permanent." And that is just ONE instance. |
