Default Propeller/Shaft Clicking Noise

Friends,

I have a 1993 Genesis with a Merc Alpha One 4.3LX. It's going in the
water for the first time in 18 months. The shift cable was replaced 18
months ago. I just got the shift cable adjusted because it didn't
'feel' right when a adjusted the throttle/shifter when I tried to start
it for the first time on the trailer. I put the propeller on and gave
it a playful spin before I had the shifter adjusted. When I picked it
up and brought it home I gave the prop another playful spin and now it
makes a loud clicking noise. It's never made this sound before when
I've spun the prop while it's on the trailer. The shifter is in
neutral. Sorry but I don't know a lot about marine engines. Thanks

Steve

Sounds like it is in gear. Mercs will click when rotated reversed as
related to the gear they are in when not running. It's normal. When
running the engine thrust holds the gear engaged. If the shifter is not in
gear then the cables may still not be adjusted properly.

The drive is not fully in neutral. Don't be shifting while the engine is not
running. Run it on ear muffs or put it in the water and try it. If you still
have the clicking you need more adjusting.

Rick, it seems to be about six. Much louder going counter clockwise
than clockwise.

Jim, we hooked her up to the muffs and put it in gear, fwd/rev, a few
times and the clicking has now stopped. However, it needs a bit extra
coaxing to get into reverse. Maybe when she's in the denser water
it'll be okay.

James, I'll have it looked at if she's still doing it. But I think
we'll put her in tomorrow unless someone thinks that will be bad.

Thanks all!

Steve
