Default Evinrude 70hp Outboard Overheathing

I have an older Evinrude 70hp(90 model, I believe) I have a Serial
number, but don't know where to find for year.

But my problem is the overheat alarm seems to sound frequently. But if
you shut the motor off for just a few minutes it shuts off. Then you
can run it for another while longer before it does it again. But in
now is occuring more frequently than it was before. I just had a new
water pump put in at the beginning of the season and new temp sensor
and sending unit last year.

I am thinking I need a new thermostat, but would like some advice on
what to check and do. Please help me with some more info on fixing my
problem.

Thanks,
Nick

Definitely replace the thermostat and make sure there is no salt, sand, or
debris buildup in the cavity.

There were a number of service bulletins about overheating back in those
days that concerned your motor. IF you engine does not have the water
tell-tale (****er) fitting on the top of the block, see a dealer and have
them check the bulletins about relocating the fitting from the port side of
the motor to the top of the block to help in bleeding off trapped air in the
cooling system. Some motors even needed a different temp switch installed.

All good advice. There was a location change for the indicator, and an
updated sensor. Need to have someone check the temp to see if it's
overheating.

I got the tale-tail so I know, the water is getting through. You
helped reassure me that I was going to replace the correct part.
Thanks for your help. I will let you know the update.
