Default whale tail

Has anyone experienced prblems with the whale tail on the 392? My 2001
cracked in two places where the lower pesestal and the horizontal
cross-member join and, after taking it apart, I can't understand how it
stood up as long as it did. Silverton customer service said they are
not aware of any design-related claims-only accidents-related to the
whale tail. Sounds liek a whale's tail to me.
