Do you use a fishfinder, knocker, or dropper loop rig? Or are you a jig
guy? Back at the marina, a bunch of guys were cleaning some really large stripers they caught while trolling. The Bay was lovely today, light 1' chop, a bit of a breeze, blue skies. Guys I was with drank a hellacious amount of cheap beer. Blech. |

Back at the marina, a bunch of guys were cleaning some really large stripers they caught while trolling. The Bay was lovely today, light 1' chop, a bit of a breeze, blue skies. Guys I was with drank a hellacious amount of cheap beer. Blech. The three guests were using fishfinders. I was using my lightest rod with a 1/2 ounce jig. I used to fish with fishfinder rigs, but when I started using powerpro, I found that the bait and leader would helicoptor around the mainline and twist up badly. I then switched to jigs tied to a fluorocarbon leader, and then a uni-to-uni to the mainline. I still use jigs most of the time (Hank Brown Hookup lures are best, but pricey), but when I fish deeper water in a strong current, I have to use a heavier weight. And the problem with jigs, is that as you increase weight, you increase hook size. There are a lot of bait stealers down there, so if I'm fishing in deeper water and/or in a stronger current, I'm now using a dropper loop rig (a.k.a. guppy rig) with one or two hooks. I can increase weight, while keeping the smaller hook size. |
