especially when you can't even buy a 2 cycle weed eater in CA.

You must not be keeping up with 2-stroke technology. Traditional 2-strokes
are very "dirty" but the new type like Evinrude E-TEC are "cleaner" than
4-strokes. They even won an EPA award.

Even on pristine Lake Tahoe, the Lake Tahoe Regional Planning Agency uses
E-TEC engines on their patrol boats.

And that's nice to know, Bill, and I hope they can stay around due to
their compatable light weight, and performance, plus added fuel
economy. I am evidently looking at a different picture in a different
book, I suppose.

I know of several lakes that have banned 2-strokes, due to what you
said, being old "dirty" technology. And if I may say, I'm glad to see
the new technologies for cleaning up over due polutions on -cycle
engines.. ie it's about time.

California is really down on 2-cycle engines fo any kind. and other
states may follow suit.

now the lakes that are banning 2 cycle's... are they making, or going
to make exceptions for the E-TEC?

Anyone can use an E-TEC on the lake as it is a California 3 star rated
ultra-clean motor. That is why the LTRPA replaced their Hondas with E-TECs,
as the Evinrudes were cleaner and have less carbon monoxide emissions than
a 4-stroke.

Very few lakes have 2 stroke bans, but there are lakes that have complete
engine bans. The E-TEC engines are allowed anywhere 4-stroke EFI motors are
allowed.

That's pretty dated stuff, Del, it doesn't even list the Yamaha HPDI motors
or mention E-TECs.

Lake Tahoe is restricted to engines meeting EPA 2006 emission specs which
are the same as CA 1-star, and that's a lot of motors today.

is that other manufacturers are going back to two stroke tech out of

I am looking at a 2004 Alumacraft 17.5 foot boat with a 115 Evinrude Ficht
motor. This boat and motor has about 200 hours on it.

That's about 100 hrs per year which isn't all that much.

Should I really be worried?

No - absolutely not.

Didn't most of these motors that were bad "blow up" within a few hours
when
new? Also I seem to remember reading in this N/G that if they got past the
first few hours of operation without breaking you probably had a good
engine.

Not true at all. They are sound and will work just fine.

The main thing is to have the engine checked out by a qualified
mechanic - have the engine hours checked, compression, etc. Spend the
money on an hour of shop time and have them tell you if it's good or
not.

What percentage of failures did the manufacturers have?
Weren't the bigger motors, i.e..; 200 hp and above really the majority of
the problems.

No - 150/175 which shared the same block.

OBTW 3 weeks fishing starts today!!!!!!!!!!! No more inspecting new
cars for 3 weeks!!!!
Nothing but wind, water, good friends, fishing, and a little beer ;-)

The salesman told me if the boat had any other engine it would be gone
already. he seems to think it may be around until fall.

I have been around this NG for a few years (check out my boat on the boats
of rec.boats webpage). I know Karen's "rep" here as a Ficht hater and lover
of diesel outboards and wanted to see if she had any statements backed up by
facts.

The first week of fishing was slow due to all the storms this past week. A
couple of crappie, couple of largemouth, some redears (they sure are fun to
catch on an ultralight with 4 lb test mono.) 3 wipers (the biggest around 6
lbs).

OBTW we have a standing rule: No Beer In The Boat Period!
The beer part comes when we get back to fish camp ;-)
