Default Using out of state boat in Ohio-registration?

I live in Georgia but will be in Ohio for 5 months and want to use my boat
there. Ohio tells me i need an ohio title to get a registration number, but i
live in georgia, the bill comes for the boat to me in georgia,I have it
financed through honda finance when i bought it new. Any ideas? The title
places in ohio have absolutely no idea what i need to do,one told me i need
an ohio title for it,another told me an out of state resident cant have an
ohio title. They are complete morons it seems in this area.
Thanks for any info you ucan provide.

I boat on Lake Erie and live in Ohio.

If the State of Ohio Department of Motor Vehicles cannot help you out with a
straight answer I would just run with your existing registration. If
stopped just have the registration paper available and tell them you are
only here for the week.

We see plenty of boats with out of state registration numbers here on Lake
Erie. I don't know why the CG or local police would single you out just
because you showed a GA registration on your boat.

If you want I can call the DMV and Cleveland office of the USCG for you
tomorrow to get a straight answer. Just let me know if you want me to. ;-)

Default Using out of state boat in Ohio-registration?

The problem is I have called the Ohio DMV,DNR,title offices. I get a
different answer each time I call them. No one seems to know what to do,some
told me i cant use my boat here even. Without anyone knowing what to do i am
afraid to put the boat on the water for fear of getting it taken away if
they pull me over or something.

Florida has a similar 60 day consecutive use law for out of state registered
or federally documented boats. When we had a winter house there and I had
both a documented boat and a MA registered smaller boat, I was advised by
the "locals" in the know to simply take them out of state every three months
for a day, fuel them, take a picture at the gas station or otherwise get
proof that the boat was not in Florida, return and the 60 day countdown
started over again.

Never bothered, and never was bothered either.

Although the chances of "getting caught" are low IMO, I wouldn't assume
boating law enforcement is similar to automobile operation law enforcement
where a ticket and fine are usually all that happens. Marine and Admiralty
Law are strange animals compared to typical auto rules.

I recall reading a story in one of the boating mags a couple of years ago.
Some guy had a boat in Florida (I think) who ran it across a protected reef,
causing environmental damage to it. I've forgotten the details, but he
initially did not get caught and ended up selling the boat. A couple of
years later the new owner, completely oblivious to the reef incident got a
letter requiring him to pay a huge fine for the damage done to the reef.
The owner obviously claimed it wasn't him as he did not own the boat at the
time of the incident, however he was still found to be financially
responsible because, according to Admiralty Law, the claim for damages goes
to and is assigned to the boat, with the current owner being the financially
responsible party. This poor guy fought in court but finally settled for a
fine of 20 grand which was a fraction of the imposed fine.

Unless you are leaving it in a marina, if you ever do get stopped, unless
you admit to being there for the summer, I doubt they will even raise an
eyebrow. What part of Ohio will you be in?
