So much for 'Free Trade'. Canada had to agree to a cap of 34% of the US market. My question would be...if the US wasn't honorable with the original Free Trade Agreement, how can it be trusted to honour this agreement? http://www.cbc.ca/story/world/nation...ood060427.html Too bad. What are you going to do now, invade the US like the Mexicans have? Since our dollar is now over .89 US and rising...we'll just buy you out and send the republican supporters packing. (unless they see the evil of their ways & repent) You mean Canada is about to make an offer that we can't refuse? RCE One way ticket to Oz. We are not part of that club. |

You can thank the current congress and administration's fiscal irresponsibility and record breaking deficit spending for driving down the US dollar to be close to par for you guys. Bush is actually a Canadian spy, don't ya know. We knew we'd look good in comparison. In fact, during your last election I remember saying - "Well, Bush may be bad for the planet, but he is GOOD for Canada." It's an ill wind and all that . . . On cue, our manufacturing and tourism people are now crying and moaning about the strength of our dollar. They say sales will start to drop off as our goods become more expensive. Tourism is down as many Americans find that Canada isn't the cheap deal it once was. Then we have Bush's new law requiring a passport or expensive identity card for US citizens to get back into their own country. Land of the Free indeed! What our tourism people fail to see is that Americans, on the whole, aren't going anywhere anymore. Pansies! |

Tourism is down as many Americans find that Canada isn't the cheap deal it once was. Then we have Bush's new law requiring a passport or expensive identity card for US citizens to get back into their own country. Land of the Free indeed! The law doesn't specifically require a passport. The standard is that you must be "able to prove to the satisfaction of the Customs examiner" that you are a US citizen. Depending on the mood or motivation of the individual customs examiner, this can vary between a simple verbal interview, "Where were you born, how long were you in Canada, what are you bringing back? Ok, have a nice day" to a full blown third degree with "park your car and bring your papers to the office". The reason the passport has become the default document is that everybody, (even Customs examiners), is expected to accept a valid US Passport as proof of citizenship. Sometimes you can get by with a driver's license and a copy of a birth certificate. (You can usually get by with a photo ID and a copy of the birth certificate for your own minor children travelling in your company). But if you get a grumpy examiner who wants to put you through the most extreme number of hoops, a passport is going to be needed to prove citizenship. |

Thanks so much, you were one of the first contributors and got the first iteration of my 'thank you' email. (Which isn't automated!) Check your email, and thanks again (especially for making it before my 'matching contribution' offer, although you *could* do it again if you really wanted to put me in the poorhouse.) -- 'Til next time, John H ****************************************** ***** Have a Spectacular Day! ***** ****************************************** |
