Can someone whose full time residence is in MA register a boat in Florida?

I know I can get the info tomorrow from the State but the sale of a friends
boat hinges on the answer to above.

If he/she also has a Florida residence address, yes.

Thanks for the input. Yes, the buyer does have a Florida address and
resides here 5~7 months a year, the balance in MA.

I'm a full time Virginia resident but have my boat registered in Maryland.
Here it depends on where the boat is kept. Have you checked with the
Florida folks?

YES.... BUT did you pay 6% sales tax already in Mass? If not, get
ready to pay the balance (or all 6%) to the state of Florida. Most
part timers try to register in a state that has no boat sales tax BUT,
that only allows you a few months a year of Florida boating. If you
bought it here, you only have a couple weeks to get out of Florida or
you pay the 6% tax.

We love your money... bring it on down so we can keep our state income
tax free

The boat will be purchased in Florida and will remain in Florida full time.
It's just that MA is the buyer's legal residence and spends several months
in Florida.

The boat will be purchased in Florida and will remain in Florida full
time. It's just that MA is the buyer's legal residence and spends several
months in Florida.


The buyer obviously will have to pay Florida sales tax, but will have no
problem registering it.
We were in the same situation for almost 4 years. Our primary residence is
MA, but we had another house in Florida where we spent 4 to 6 months during
the winter. There are rules about declaring residency ... but none applied
in our case since I didn't work there or have kids in school there. I never
got a Florida driver's license, yet had no problem buying, titling and
registering a small pickup truck in Florida using our Florida address.

In fact .... Florida does have some requirement that if an out of state boat
or federally documented boat is in Florida for 60 consecutive days or more,
it *must* be registered with the state and given a Florida number. I had a
documented boat there for almost 2 years and ignored this requirement
without any problems, however.
