Lead sulphate actually.

The voltage has to be applied in brief pulses to be effective. That
is the only thing that smacks of high technology in the whole device.

They do work but my preference is to get a battery charger thrown in
as part of the deal. There is no reason to desulphate continuously
that I'm aware of.
