I went to see a very well maintained 1990 Chris Craft 21' cuddy 198 a
couple days ago here in Minnesota. I checked it over thoroughly, everything looks great so far. Very clean 5.7 L, OMC cobra outdrive. I was impressed by the condition it was in. Does anyone know of this genre of CC reputation? It seems that CC has had a somewhat spotty reputation in the last twenty years. Another boat I've found in my price range is a 1985 Glastron cv-23, 5.7L with alpha 1 outdrive. I love the style of this boat. Do these have a better reputation or quality build? I want something that will hold up well to a bit of abuse on our lakes and rivers, and plan to maintain it myself. Thanks! |

OMC is out of business so I would consider that a factor. Any boat this age
should be checked for transom, stringer and floor rot. "NewbDude" wrote in message oups.com... I went to see a very well maintained 1990 Chris Craft 21' cuddy 198 a couple days ago here in Minnesota. Was the mechanic who showed me the records for his yearly service on
the 1990 Chris-Craft lying when he told me "The OMC cobra is good motor and outdrive" I have no idea if 1990 was a good year or a bad one....? |

It's a Chevrolet 350 engine, same as a Merc. The 5.8 Ford was also offered some years in the Cobra. The drive is better than the antiquated Alpha 1 in many regards, I would have no problem buying one, but I do most of my own work and know where to get parts. The Alphas, when they get this old, get pretty loose & "cluncky" - more than new. The Cobra drive leg design was incorporated into the Volvo SX series with their cone clutch when Volvo aquired the OMC outdrive division. There is still a familial resemblance. I'd take the Cobra drive on the Glastron given my druthers. Rob |

Thanks for the insight Rob,
I'd take the Cobra drive on the Glastron given my druthers. I think you meant, "I'd take the Cobra drive on the Chris-Craft"...? The 1990 CC has the 5.7 L OMC Cobra. The 1985 Glastron has the Alpha 1. By the way, the broker for the CC took my offer of $6600 - below Nada value. Will do sea trial this weekend. |

My mistake the Chris-Craft says "OMC Cobra 5.8L - 270hp" not a 5.7L as
I said above. Too bad....I like Chev engines better. |
