I never proffered being the monitor, Don. I did suggest a committee of
*NG elected* monitors to restore the NG to its previously interesting
open and far more civil format. We would *all* decide just what that
format would be in the month of discussion and voting on the charter. I
suspect the end result would be far less political and flame throwing
threads. Suspect I'd have a far easier time abiding by a responsible NG
charter than you would, however. Some of us would find ourselves
severely challenged if we primarily discussed boats 'n boating, eh, Don?

Skipper, Chuck posted a challenge that many of us accepted and have tried
to maintain. A few have decided they'd rather sling mud.

Is rec.boats.cruising a 'monitored' group? I think not. Yet they manage
quite well. Why? How often do you see a political/religious thread over
there? How often do you see a political/religious thread here that doesn't
become a name-calling free-for-all.

Monitor yourself. Urge others to monitor themselves.

It just won't work here, John...for many reasons. The only hope for
alt.sailing.asa and this NG is democratic monitoring. Monitors who allow
off-topic, differing views and lively discussions, but keep it within
bounds. I think we all know when it goes to far. Sans monitors, there's
just no reasonable way to bring it back from the small-minded off-topic
chatroom and flamefest it has become.

I made no mention of alt.sailing.asa. Never been there. I mentioned
rec.boats.cruising. You've been there. It's not monitored. It doesn't
suffer the problems of this group. Why?

We have a small minority of posters who are trollers. We have a small
minority of posters who can't resist getting hooked.

Small minority? Actually, it's the *majority* of those still posting to
this NG. I recently polled a sampling of NG regulars, contributors to
other boating NGs, and past rec.boats contributors. The response was
revealing; no current rec.boats posters were in favor of moderating the
flame, almost all past contributors and contributors to other boating
groups favored moderation. When in Rome... And a good Skipper has a
realistic eye to the weather. This and alt.sailing.asa *are* the NGs for
boating trollers. Krause made that happen.

So Harry controls your behavior?
What does that say about you?

That Skipper recognizes a dedicated sycophant when he sees one.

You made your moderating post in rec.boats.cruising and got laughed out of
the group. Now you're saying 'almost all...contributors...were in favor..."
That's garbage.

There are four or five regular trollers here. I would consider you one of
them. They are certainly not the 'majority'. Most of the trollers are also
the 'hookees', and just keep the crap flowing.

I'll not be posting the emails of support I received from that group to
protect their privacy. Can you point us to a couple posts *from* the
cruising group that back up your claim?

Would you care to point us toward a post of yours that would not be
defined as mindless effluent?

I'd probably be reduced to reading and regurgitating other sailors
adventures...such as cruises in exotic locations like.....the Sea of
Cortes etc.
