Why would you choose one type of propulsion over another?

I happen to own a boat with a single diesel inboard, and find it very satisfactory especially for fuel economy. Maintenance is easier too. Some things I am surprised nobody has mentioned about outboards- they are targets for thieves.... they can be unclamped & carried to the shop for repairs, or winter storage; also ease of replacement is the best.
