anyone else notice something funny about this pic? not being a physics
major, i would venture my guess it would be easier to push the boat off
the shoal if the fat guy either stood on the other side, or got OFF the

If you zoom in you can see the fat guy is standing on the other side, it is
probably the only reason the boat is listing as much as it is.

We had a discussion about this picture, specifically the warning sign,
sometime last year. To me the sign looks more like an advertising sign
(Danger Shoal Grill and Bar 100 yards ahead) than an actual warning sign.
It is also not visible in all directions, as the fat slob in the picture
proves.

The only time I would sail a narrow channel would be under uncrowded
conditions where you would have plenty of room to stay clear of a tacking
sailboat or if I did not have power. I do not find it agreeable to sail
narrow channels when unnecessary due to the overwhelming presence of

Plus, if you check the regs, it's illegal for a sailboat with power to be
under sail only in a crowed, narrow harbor channel.

I'm not familiar with that rule, but it wouldn't apply to my style of
sailing anyway. It just makes sense to save the sailing for outside the
breakwater on a busy day.

Now Shortwave, you are describing my observations of powerboaters; of
course, I've never used autopilot in my life and still couldn't imagine
taking my eyes off the water around me. I'll meet you half way and offer to
agree that whether under sail or power there are some really senseless
skippers out there that shouldn't be given responsibility for anything more
than a plastic boat for the bathtub.

unfortunately, there are idiots like this all around. we get our share,
but we tend to avoid places where they like to show off like that.

I agree, that guy should be banned from boating. I would think anyone
in any of those cruisers would be justified at taking out his boat the
way is driving. What if someone were swimming in the water???
