My only trips outside the US up until three years ago were courtesy of
Uncle Sam and I was much too busy to pay attention to culture except
for the occasional R&R - even then, it was more a case of "Oh, that's
nice". My time in Australia was courtesy of Uncle Sam when we were
training with some SAS types.

I will be the first to admit that I am the prototypical Ugly American
in the sense that I could care less about other cultures - I'm just
not interested. I don't want to "understand" them, I don't want to
"know" about them, I basically don't want to have anything to do with
them. Cultural Anthropology has never been one of my interests. Other
than Ireland and a fishing trip to Cuba, I've never been outside the
confines of the US since I left the service and I have no desire to do
so.

Hell, I don't even like to leave the confines of New England and
specifically, CT, RI, MA and occasionally, NY and I get nervous when
I'm outside the CT state lines. :)

You mentioned that you were up in my area at one time. What mayhem were
you part of then?

Even I know where Rochester is...and I've never been there.
The reason might be that you have had an AHL hockey team there forever,
before we did, and you still have one after we lost all three of ours.
Nova Scotia Voyagers ... farm team of Montreal
Nova Scotia Oilers ......farm team of Edmonton
Halifax Citadels ......farm team of Quebec

We still have the team because all 203 fans keep paying for tickets. My son
and I went to couple of games with his boy scout troop. It was like watching
paint dry, except for a fist fight near the end. The final score was
something like 3-0. Snore...zzzzzzz........

The teams only did so so in attendance here so they moved away where
they didn't draw much more. Our 'Halifax Mooseheads' Major Junior team
does much better and are quite popular.

We have a new professional, not NBA, basketball in Maryland named the Night
Hawks. They have a pretty good marketeer that has figured out that you
invite local elementary schoold chorus', dance teams and cheerleading teams
and the stands get filled up with proud parents paying to see their child
perform at a sports event.

Do any shooting with a red dot sight?

By the way, the other reason I don't use a laser thing is that both of
my pistols are carry pieces. There's simply no good way for a sane
person to carry a gun with a scope of any kind mounted on top. And, I'm
reading some negative things about lasers that are part of the grips.
Just get yourself a lanyard, and open carry. I don't like the laser
sights at all, but the red dots are interesting.

Open carry? Describe further.

There are some states that allow you to display your handgun unconcealed,
as it were. I think Arizona is one, maybe New Mexico.

It's illegal in NY. And, it would be stupid anyway. The chance of having
someone take it from you are obviously increased if it's exposed. You can't
always be prepared for that.

If the weather is decent, I'll be out by the Shenandoah Monday. openly
carrying a handgun. Bears and feral dogs don't wait for you to draw. There
are some mountain lions out there, too. You know, I think Virginia is also
an open carry state.

www.packing.org - I believe that explains each state.
