I'm busy cleaning the guns and setting up the razor wire. If anyone comes
down MY chimney, he's not going back up. There's something strange about a
holiday when you're supposed to not only *wish* for an intruder, but also
leave food out for him.

Wife, daughters and DIL decided on roast beef for tomorrow. Not just
any roast beef - A FREAKIN' STEAMSHIP ROUND OF PRIME RIB!!!

It's slow roasting as we speak.

You have any idea how much that damn thing cost me?

Tonight, the traditional Christmas Eve meal of American Slop Chewy,
salad, garlic bread and banana cream pie. Then all the Military types
get out the dress uniforms, the kids get cleaned up and it's off to
8:00 mass (kids mass). I'm sitting this one out because my RA is
flaring and I'm really not in the mood.

It's the stress of having all these freakin' people in my house. :)

Not I.

My shopping is done.

My personal shopping coach flew in from New York to steer me through
the proper series of department stores and point out just the styles,
colors, and sizes that would be perfect for my wife. (Personal shopping
coach is my adult daughter, who will be visiting until NYD). Personal
shopping coach managed to "hint" that she really personally liked a
bottle of a certain cologne, so it found its way to the cash register
along with one of the groups of baubles and bangles for the Mrs. You
think gas is expensive? I don't know what fraction of an ounce, or so,
you get for $80- but you know that stuff has to be selling somewhere on
the upper side of $1000 a gallon. It would be cheaper if my Personal
shopping coach/adult daughter simply daubed gasoline or diesel behind
her ears- but on second thought that would only attract a powerboater
(like her dad) or a NASCAR fan, so the cologne is a wise investment.

Still today:

Football game with son.
Drive out to little farm town tonight, visit my inlaws. Drive back.

Tomorrow:

up at 0600, go downtown and prepare breakfast for 200 homeless
1000, will go to neighborhood church
1100, go home to rejoin wife and kids. My parents will show up before
1200 to spend the afternoon and dine on holiday beast.

Some "holiday", I'm running my arse off. Much prefer more spontaneuos
and more natural
celebrations, but solstice is just past and light is reentering the
world on as many levels as one cares to consider it (even if the
Christians have the date screwed up- big grin and a friendly wink).

Interesting to note that in the earliest years, the Christian New Years
was at the spring solsitice, in the month we now call March.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holdiays, etc etc etc to everybody in the NG.

Doug,
Border Collies do have high energy, but their natural instinct is to try to
figure out what their master wants. They are considered the smartest and
most well behaved dog you can adopted. The only negative is they do want to
"work", and if you live in an urban area they can get bored.

rib. He must think they are gluttons. Will be nice left over's. And off

Training, training and more training. Both of them go through an hour
every other day, we run through all the obedience commands, then we
train a on a skill like tracking or herding (the farmer in back of me
lends his heifers for that) and then it's play time. Play can be any
number of "events" - mostly high energy events like chasing balls or
playing soccer.

They are great dogs.

The kid's dog is here and is Lab, Border Collie mix. Still not completely
under control, but is only 6 months old. Tries to be a runner. Wants to

That's the best time to work with them. Actually no, the
best time to begin a dog's training is much younger.

Time spent with a very young puppy is the most bang for the
buck in terms of shaping the dog's behavior later in life.
It takes some patience, consistency, and willingness to work
with a puppy's instincts & attitudes... and for me it has
always been great fun to have a puppy running around.

Collies and most herding dogs need a lot of exercise.
They're also too noisy for me. I've had more retrievers than
any other breed, IMHO they are perfect boating

http://community.webshots.com/photo/...83126526ongQsz

& household dogs. Our current dog is an unknown... I suspect
at least 1/4 pit bull, but people have guessed everything
from Chesapeake Bay Retriever to Rhodesian Ridgeback to hyena.

Yep. Our last dog learned "sit" and "heel" at about 14
weeks... within two weeks of bringing him home.

The important thing with a young puppy is to teach them to
pay attention to you, and imprint on them that they will be
rewarded for good behavior... good as defined by you, of course.

.... The difference with BCs is that their
attention span increases exponentially as you work with them as
puppies - if you keep them busy and active they can be as advanced in
training at six months as any other dog is at a year.

I'd say that's true with all working breeds, in fact I
suspect as a general prinicple, it's true of all dogs...
maybe all mammals...

Ours are strictly working dog stock and in general, have been much
smarter than the average BC.

That ain't sayin' much. I've known a few border collies &
small shepherd breeds that were often outsmarted by a plate
of meat loaf.

I've owned one retriever, but I wasn't overly impressed - that was
probably one dog that I've owned that I wasn't overly enthusiastic
about. Good dog, just not my style.

What, didn't he bark at nothing often enough?

.... I ended up giving her to a
friend who hunts ducks and she was very happy with him.

Good. Not enough happy homes for dogs in this country, these
days.

I've trained a lot of dogs in my time, but standard, non-registered
stock dogs, BCs, Heelers, etc., are the best in my opinion. They can
do pretty much anything.

Hmmm... it's rare to have a dog that can both point & fetch,
but how about one that also retrieves a wallet dropped out
of the boat? Chesapeakes have a bad reputation with people
who can't raise them properly, but IMHO they're the best of
the best.

Here is a story you might enjoy, and illustrates part of why
I think so much of retrievers in general and Chessies in
particular.

http://www.amchessieclub.org/a-reddog.html

Another thing: swimming is very potent exercise... a tired
dog is a well-behaved dog (and a dog that gets regular
exercise is a healthy dog). Playing fetch in the water for
1/2 an hour is the equivalent of at least two hours of
running around in circles on dry land.

Most people don't spend enough time with their dogs, I'm
glad to hear about you all including yours in the family.

Merry Christmas!

We just got back from visiting the kids in Richmond. We took the presents down there
this year to save her from the packing and driving up here. She's the one who had the
breast removal two weeks ago, and was back in yesterday for some further surgery. She
is in no shape to bring the family up here.

We had a most enjoyable time. The other daughter and family were there also, so we
had five grandchildren running around. Well, one was just crawling. Grandkids must
have been intelligently designed to give us old folks a lot of pleasure!

Tomorrow the local daughter and family come over to open gifts and have dinner. Prime
rib and big shrimp. Can't wait.

Cooking that turkey already? We do it Christmas Day.
My assigned duties today include cleaning the upstairs bathroom top to
bottom.

Turkey, stuffing and all the fixings today. Tomorrow we go to 8 a.m. mass,
then open gifts while sipping on our favorite adult beverage, then pork,
sauerkraut and dumplings for dinner. We will have the same on News Years
Day.

Pork and sauerkraut were my wife's tradition, black-eyed peas and ham hocks were
mine. We do both!

Merry Christmas to all!

It's the stress of having all these freakin' people in my house. :)

I go to Safeway since they have Prime Rib on sale at $5 / pound for club
members and ask for a roast for 11 people. He cuts and wraps me a 10# prime
rib. He must think they are gluttons. Will be nice left over's. And off
to deliver goodie trays later, and pick up the Tamales for dinner. Youngest
is off to look at the set up for a Bat'h Mitzvah ( or however the females is
spelt). For her August wedding reception. Oldest is off to an engagement
party. Just the parents and the kids dog.

I've just been informed that we are adding two Sailors and two Marines
from the Navy Base for tomorrow's dinner. Wife has already left for a
quick foray into Target/Walmart/Sears to pick up some small presents.

If never rains, it pours. :)

When I was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK, I had guard duty around a post exchange on
Christmas Eve. The next day a few of us were invited to a family's house for
Christmas dinner. That was in 1965, and it is something I will never forget. You are
doing a good thing, and those Sailors and Marines will always remember it.

The old couple that had us over have long since passed away, so I'll say "Thanks" to
you instead.

And that's the way it should be. You will have a great

Ah I bitch and moan, but I knew it was going to happen. My oldest boy

Six dogs. You said six, as in 6. Six dogs.

Six as in two Border Collies, two Australian Blue Heelers, one English
Bulldog, one German Shepard. At the moment, they are playing keep
away with each other in the play pen in the back yard.

Shortly, they will be brought in and the kids will help me give them
all baths, wash/dry and then to their crates for a couple of hours
while the dinner table is set up. One dinner is finished, they are
let out to join in the celebrations.

It's kind of charming actually. They all get together and take over a
corner of the living room and just sit watching the activities.

I trained each and every one of them and they are all excellent dogs.

Keep your dog opinions to yourself.

Even the border collies behave? How on earth did you accomplish that? They
always seem to have a natural internal source of methamphetamines.

Couldn't you train them to chase cars?

That's the best time to work with them. Actually no, the
best time to begin a dog's training is much younger.

Right from the git go in fact. The difference with BCs is that their
attention span increases exponentially as you work with them as
puppies - if you keep them busy and active they can be as advanced in
training at six months as any other dog is at a year.

Ours are strictly working dog stock and in general, have been much
smarter than the average BC.

I've owned one retriever, but I wasn't overly impressed - that was
probably one dog that I've owned that I wasn't overly enthusiastic
about. Good dog, just not my style. I ended up giving her to a
friend who hunts ducks and she was very happy with him.

I've trained a lot of dogs in my time, but standard, non-registered
stock dogs, BCs, Heelers, etc., are the best in my opinion. They can
do pretty much anything.

This was a resue dog, and was about 6 months when the got her. Actually
Cloe is doing pretty well.

I have no idea - not my job. All I know is it's called a steamship
round of prime rib - and it's freakin' huge and cost me a ton of
money.

De Nada. Younger daughter has been shopping wedding reception places while
home. The reception will cost me almost what the budget for the first girls
wedding was 6 years ago. So the cost of Prime Rib, seems like a pittance
this year. Oh well, maybe Santa will bring me a winning lotto ticket.

The wife took me to Ruth's Chris Steak House for my birthday. Two steaks (nothing I'd
