If you are asking questions like that I think you should access some kind of theoretical and practical training before you consider such a voyage. Contrary to popular opinion in USA you don't need guns when you leave America. Its quite safe out here - really it is! If you did meet 'pirates' you can bet that they will be more heavily armed than you so you have a choice: 1. Don't carry guns - get robbed and live to tell the tale. 2.
