Iraq troops 'not just about WMDs'
July 14, 2004 US military engagement in Iraq did not hinge on the presence of weapons of mass destruction, former US president Bill Clinton said today. But regardless of the reasons for military involvement in Iraq, the troops were now there and it was important to make the situation work, he said. Mr Clinton said US President George W. Bush had been correct to demand UN inspectors be allowed into Iraq. "I think he (Mr Bush) was right to demand that we have the UN inspection and if the UN inspectorate said Saddam Hussein is not cooperating I would have supported the military action even if the UN didn't," Mr Clinton told Sydney radio 2GB in a wide-ranging phone interview from the US. Mr Clinton said the Bush administration had been focused on getting rid of Saddam Hussein and was not just concerned about whether Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. "The Bush administration believed that there were different reasons for (controlling) Saddam Hussein. "They thought whether or not he had weapons of mass destruction, it would be a good thing to get rid of him because he was a bad guy, because a more democratic government in Iraq could be good." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- It was more than just WMDs. Is Bill secretly working against Kerry so that his wife is the Democratic frontrunner in 2008? |

Yeah, the Cheney/Wolfowitz pipe dream of democracy breaking out all over the middle east. While Clinton backed Bush on confronting Saddam, he is critical of the timing of the invasion. He thought that Bush should have allowed the inspectors to finish their work. He has also stated that the biggest terrorist threat is Al Qaeda, not Saddam. Perhaps, if this administration hadn't been distracted by Iraq, bin Laden who *did* attack us, might not still bin Missin'. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...2004Jun19.html http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exer...03724CD4BF.htm |

While Clinton backed Bush on confronting Saddam, he is critical of the timing of the invasion. Are you sure? I mean, how do you know where Clinton really stands on *any* issue: "The Time excerpts, in particular, leave Clinton's views on Iraq somewhat jumbled..." "And some day, some way, I guarantee you he'll (Saddam) use the arsenal." In the Time interview, Clinton said "I never really thought" Hussein would use his weapons but did worry that Iraqi weapons might be sold or given away. He has also stated that the biggest terrorist threat is Al Qaeda, not Saddam. It *is* the biggest threat. But Clinton never believed that when he was in office...despite the 1993 WTC attack, the Khobar tower bombings, the USS Cole, the US Embassy bombings, etc. Clinton was too busy bombing Serbs and Iraqi intelligence buildings. If he believed that bin Laden was the biggest threat, he wouldn't have put the inept Justice dept. in charge of ridding us of terrorism...and he wouldn't have been using our military against the Serbs and Saddam...instead of against the Taliban and bin Laden. administration hadn't been distracted by Iraq, bin Laden who *did* attack us, might not still bin Missin'. If Clinton took the Sudanese up on their offer to turn over bin Laden, he wouldn't be bin Missin' either, right? |

Clinton's perception of the threat grew during his term in office. To be fair, evidence linking the 1993 WTC to Al Qaeda is sketchy, at best, and only seen in hindsight. The Khobar Towers bombing it the act that put bin Laden in our sights. After that, Clinton did fail to apprehend him, but then GWB has been in office for 3 1/2 years and bin Laden is still bin Missin'. If Clinton took the Sudanese up on their offer to turn over bin Laden, he wouldn't be bin Missin' either, right? It's hard to wade through the BS to get to the facts on that offer, but if it was a valid offer and Clinton had taken them up on it, much would have changed. The probability is that 9/11 would never have happened, as is the probability that Bush would not be in a close Presidential race. Without his "War on Terrorism" propping him up, Bush's Presidency would be in the dumpster. |

Bass,
It wasn't Harry who used the expression "The sky is falling". I know you like to pick up Harry's "word or expression of the day" and weave it into your posts, but you copied that from a damn conservative. Maybe you can get Harry to email you his list of favorite expression so you won't make that mistake again. "basskisser" wrote in message om...
