Del,
Thanks for clearing that up, it is now clear as mud.

I was correct though when I said "old farts" still refer to them as Lists.

Tom,
If I understand you correctly, Usenet is the correct name for the method
of compiling and distributing Newsgroups/Lists/Electronic Bulletin
Boards. Newsgroups/Lists/Electron Bulletin Board can be read via
Newsgroup Readers, Web Sites such as Google, or Email Distributions
Lists.

Since original most newsgroups were read via Email Distribution Lists,
old farts like yourself, sometimes call them "Lists". ; )

Did I get that correct?

No, not exactly. Newsgroups, mailing lists, and bulletin boards are all
different. Mailing lists came first, and in some cases were replaced by
newsgroups dealing with the same subject matter. Bulletin boards sprung
up with the low end PC, and are now primarily accessed by means of the
world wide web, having evolved to a webserver based technology.

Mailing lists use email as a transmission medium. Newsgroups use a
collection of News Servers, connected by NNTP, and bulletin boards use the
world wide web.
