If I understand you correctly, Usenet is the correct name for the method of
compiling and distributing Newsgroups/Lists/Electronic Bulletin Boards.
Newsgroups/Lists/Electron Bulletin Board can be read via Newsgroup Readers,
Web Sites such as Google, or Email Distributions Lists.
Since original most newsgroups were read via Email Distribution Lists, old
farts like yourself, sometimes call them "Lists". ; )
Did I get that correct?

Usenet has always been Usenet. List is a old timer's term for Usenet
newsgroups because back in the day, email "lists" were the newsgroup
of their day.
Thus the term.
