You only need one filter change.


Not true. It is a factor of how many hours you put on the engine during the
season. A good rule of thumb is an oil change every 100 hours or at least
once/season.

And the best time to change it, if it is only once/season, is before the
winter layover.


Of course you should change the oil and/or filter as recommended by the
manufacturer as you log hours on the engine during the season. But I
don't think that was the issue.

I think the context of the "one filter change" was if you practice the
"ideal" and change your oil during winterization and again in the
spring. Since you have zero hours on that filter, you only need one
filter change (end of the season) with those two oil changes.
