If you do not have one put a voltmeter across the battery and check the
voltage.

Normally you leave the engine charging circuit to charge the battery
and run accessories from the battery.

If your battery is charging to 14-15 volts you may need to either
adjust the motors voltage regulator or find out about a aftermarket
regulator.
