Fired up my four-year old Jasper remaned 5.7 Mercruiser (carb ) today. Now
have a metal on metal-(ting ting ting) sound coming from what seems to be the
timing gear cover. Seems to dissapate when the engine warms up. Motor has
about 130 hours on it. Put new water pump on it two weeks ago. Any help would
be appreciated!

Flush the engine...might be a stuck or dirty valve. What type of oil are you
using? It may be too thick...

Ole Jasper may have a leaking down/sticky hydraulic valve lifter. Try using
a heavy duty cleaning type oil like Valoline Max life, it is made for high
milage engines but in your case the cleaning action may clean your lifter.

I'd be taking a close look at the new waterpump. Use a stethoscope to
locate the noise.

If you don't have a stethoscope, a long bladed screwdriver works well. Put the
blade on the pump and the handle against your ear. You'll be able to tell if
something is amiss.
