Back from a nice trip.
To celebrate the wife's Master degree (graduation was Aug 28th) we decided
to take a small trip to Lake Erie. Took the 25' Malibu up, and rented a slip within walking distance to our water front hotel, in Port Clinton on Sandusky bay. Drive time was only 2 hours, 10 minutes. Went to Cedar Point (large amusement park.16 coasters) on the first day. I always love using their marina, as you basically "pass" all the auto traffic/parking on the causeway, and their docks are like 50' from the entrance. The park was a blast. The lines were short, and the weather perfect. Through out the week, we cruised all the hot spots and sights on Marblehead and Catawba Islands, but we had to stay in on Tuesday, as the lake report was 4-7' waves on the lake, which translated to 2-5' in the bay. A little much for my Malibu, but no big deal, as we made our rounds to the many (hic) winery's and other "land locked" sites. We (or should I say "her") even got in a lot of shopping. We were planning to stay pretty much in the bay, but Thursday's lake condition report called for calm waters with low wind and 1-2' waves, so we cruised out to the Bass Islands. What a blast Put-In-Bay was on South Bass. Plus, I always like to get out in some real open water, even tho the bay is 100 square miles. On Friday, we took in some fishing, and snagged some 5 lb+ walleyes, and some smaller perch. Dinner was great that night. We also got in some good skiing, inside a few calm harbors. The only thing we could complain about, were the gas prices. Marinas were hitting $3.899 per gallon of premium. That's ok tho.the boat ran good, and we had absolutely no problems whatsoever. We just got back last night, and where talking last night at how much fun we had. We were going to go back to Cancun, but basically changed our minds at the last week, to stay a little local. I'm so glad we did.the trip turned out perfect, and we both agreed we had just as much fun, as we would have in Mexico. Just thought I would share, and ask if there are any other boaters here in the Sandusky area? Later. -- -Netsock "It's just about going fast...that's all..." http://home.columbus.rr.com/ckg/ |

We love Cedar Point.....when we had bigger boats we would spend 2 or 3 days at the marina while the kids had a blast in the park. Being able to get into the park an hour earlier than the general public was also a plus. We love to go swimming in the Bay near Johnson's Island. We have even anchored overnight in that area when conditions were right. You have to be pretty careful in the Bay as it is pretty shallow throughout. Check out Kelley's Island next time you are back up in the area and stop at the Village Pump for a basket of perch and a pitcher of their famous Brandy Alexander's. Plenty of guest docking available at SeaWay or the Unique Marker (members only on weekends). A nice marina on Put-in-Bay (South Bass) is the Crews Nest (again, members only on weekends). We are planning to rent a house on the Island overlooking the water next summer and trailer our boat up with us. |

Sounds like the kind of trip that is almost stress free and memorable. We bought our little Sea Ray 185 to celebrate my wife's master's degree; it also brought a little of her lake-time childhood back for her to share with her (our) kids. Thanks for the report. |

I was down there for the 7/4 weekend and could not beleive how slow it was......a bit of carry over fro the water problem the previsous year.......I had hoped to get down there for the long weekend, but with gas prices and out of town guest, could not do it. Only a double-digit IQer would equate the COST of an outing, verses what HE thinks is a "major milestone", and what it is worth. While someone with a GED might consider it a "major milestone" (like he does), there are those of us who "live" in the heart of higher education. And while her graduation is a formidable achievement, the true test of appreciation, is how proud we are, and how much we love her. Things Krause would know nothing about. In fact, only a moron would try to place a dollar value on something like this. Tell us Krause, how much did you spend on your wife's double doctorate graduation celebration? Its also hilarious, that the whole week I was boating, our lying village idiot was sitting in front of a computer, typing away on Usenet. [huuuuge grin] |

PIB was dead slow. Just a handful of people in each bar/restaurant. No lines or waiting at any of the attractions. I saw the jet express dock a couple times, with only about 15-20 people per load. And that day had perfect weather too. Sunny, with a high of 80. I'm not complaining tho...in my "older age", and University job, I don't mind seeing less partying youngsters. They were also gearing up for the weekend. Labor day is one of their busiest weekends of the year. Take care. -- -Netsock "It's just about going fast...that's all..." http://home.columbus.rr.com/ckg/ |

... Glad to hear you had a great time. We love Cedar Point..... Yup. Been there probably over a dozen times, but this visit was the first in about 5 years. when we had bigger boats we would spend 2 or 3 days at the marina while the kids had a blast in the park. Being able to get into the park an hour earlier than the general public was also a plus. I didn't know you could get in an hour earlier! Wow, I sure will remember that next time, thanks. We love to go swimming in the Bay near Johnson's Island. We have even anchored overnight in that area when conditions were right. You have to be pretty careful in the Bay as it is pretty shallow throughout. We visited the Confederate Army Officers Cemetery on Johnson Island. First time we were ever there. The 1812 and Civil war history of the area is very interesting. Very rich indeed. Speaking of rich, have you seen the new harbor cliff homes there? Are you talking the Mineyahta portion being shallow, or the whole bay? The main bay averaged 15-20'+ in open water by my sounder, but I do know you have to be very careful when "close" to shore. Check out Kelley's Island next time you are back up in the area and stop at the Village Pump for a basket of perch and a pitcher of their famous Brandy Alexander's. Plenty of guest docking available at SeaWay or the Unique Marker (members only on weekends). So noted. I have been to Kelly's in the past, but did not go this trip. If memory serves me, that is where the glacier grooves are. A nice marina on Put-in-Bay (South Bass) is the Crews Nest (again, members only on weekends). We are planning to rent a house on the Island overlooking the water next summer and trailer our boat up with us. Lots of beautiful houses there. I love the "north coast" when thing get a little windy. Watching that clean fresh water surf is somehow different than the ocean's surf. I don't know, it just seems "purer" to me. Take care. -- -Netsock "It's just about going fast...that's all..." http://home.columbus.rr.com/ckg/ |
