Default trolling plate on 4 stroke

Regarding 40 hp Yamaha 4 stroke on 14' Lund. I expressed a concern to
the dealer that I couldn't troll slow enough with a 40 hp for
trout/walleye etc. He suggested installing a trolling plate to slow the
boat down. Later however he mentioned that some people don't recommend
using a trolling plate on a 4 stroke.

Anyone using trolling plates on a 4 stroke? Any comments would be
appreciated.

I used a spring loaded trolling plate on a Honda 15 for years without problems.

When I bought my 19 ft. cuddy it had a spring loaded trolling plate on
it. It is an I/O with a 3.0 Liter Alpha 1 (so it is a 4 stroke). The
guy said it worked well for him for several years. It was the first of
the fishing gear I took off (along with 8 pole holders) so I have no
idea how it works. It appeared well used as there were stress cracks
in it. I don't use the boat for fishing.
