U.S. Army Says It Finds Shell with Sarin Agent in Iraq
BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A small amount of the nerve agent sarin was found in a shell that exploded in Iraq, the U.S. army said Monday in the first announcement of discovery of any of the weapons on which Washington made its case for war. Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told a news conference the substance had been found in an artillery shell inside a bag discovered by a U.S. convoy a few days ago. The round had exploded, causing a small release of the substance, he said. "The Iraq Survey Group has confirmed today that a 155 (mm) artillery round containing sarin nerve agent had been found. The round had been rigged as an IED (improvised explosive device) that was discovered by a U.S. force convoy," he said. "A detonation occurred before the IED be could be rendered inoperable," Kimmitt said, adding that two members of an explosives team had been treated for exposure to the substance. Kimmitt said the round, designed to mix the sarin in flight, belonged to a class of ordnance that the ousted government of Saddam Hussein claimed to have destroyed before the 1991 Gulf war. "It is a weapon that we believe was stocked from the ex-regime time, and it had been thought to be an ordinary artillery shell set up to explode like an ordinary IED... when it exploded it indicated that it actually had some sarin in it," he said. IEDs are bombs usually planted at the side of the road to explode as coalition vehicles pass. The United States launched its invasion of Iraq last year, accusing then-president Saddam Hussein of developing chemical, biological and possibly nuclear weapons. Failure to find such weapons has stirred criticism in the United States and Britain, Washington's closest ally in the war. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ In February, 2003, Powell said that al Zaqarwi was an al Qaeda agent operating in northeastern Iraq. We now know that is true, as he's the one currently organizing the attacks against US and Iraqi troops. Powell also mentioned something about WMD's, didn't he? Seems he was right about that one as well. |

What is interesting is that the Iraqi insurgents are now using this against US troops, but Saddam didn't. I would say that "that" is is the important fact, and demonstrates what we are in for as long as we maintain ourselves as the invaders of Iraq. Saddam truly believed that there'd be an eleventh hour deal brokered by the French or Russians...and if he could hide his weapons until the heat dropped a little, he'd escape with his hidden weapons intact. Obviously, the al Qaeda terrorists have stumbled across the hidden WMD before we did. Or they've brought 'em back from Syria (the place where they were sent before the war). 3. A bit of sarin is hardly a WMD. Depends upon if you're upwind or downwind after a sarin-filled munition is detonated, eh? |

How long are you going to keep shooting yourself in the foot with this one? Actually, since most of the Sept 11th terrorists were Saudis, and the Bush family as well as the Bush/Cheney administration are great pals with the Saudis; + the fact that this guy al Zaqarwi was in Kurd territory and not only did Bush buddy up to the Kurds but he angered our long standing & staunch allies the Turks by doing so... that looks to me like there is a better case to be made that Bush has ties to Al Queda than that Saddam did. ... We now know that is true, as he's the one currently organizing the attacks against US and Iraqi troops. Powell also mentioned something about WMD's, didn't he? Seems he was right about that one as well. Yes, I distinctly remember him saying to the U.N. that the Iraqis had an shell full of sarin... Good work, comrade NOBBY. DSK |

You're dealing with someone who needs to have a minimal amount of information perfectly arranged and never disturbed. Sort of like Dustin Hoffman in "Rainman". |

Number 3 would be easy. When they're deaf and near-blind, and their cars look like they're fresh off the set of Mad Max, it's a sure bet that they'll be in an accident withing the next 6 months. Number 2 would be easy as well: you'll catch no fish tonight. Number 1 is purely random, so there's no way to accurately predict it. Number 4, "Finding the WMD", is a sure thing however. |
