On what lake is Doolittle Island? What kinda stuff there?

I was living in Lexington when they dropped the lake to kill off the Hydrilla. Nice Lake. Capt Jack R.. Right now, the hydrilla and Illinois pond weed has died back from the winter and low water levels. Last fall, they introduced sterile grass carp to eat this stuff, and they (DNR) tell us that it'll take a couple of years to really get that program going. They're trying to "sneak up" on the number needed to get it under control. Too many will destroy the cover for the good fish. Only time we get close to Doolittle (aka "Bomb") Island is to watch the Purple Martins come back to roost in the late summer evenings. It's an amazing sight, seeing tens of thousands of these birds return each night to this one island out in the middle of the lake. It turns into a big, dark cloud over and over again as they get up, fly around, and settle back down. I understand it's the only officially recognized Purple Martin refuge in North American. |
