The joke would have been funnier if the person referenced did speak Ebonics,
but the fact is many black people do speak Ebonics or black English . This
is acknowledge by all educated people, especially those in education who are
interested in improving the educational level and opportunities of blacks.

Bill Cosby, who has a PHD in education) has made a concerted effort to try
to educate blacks to the dangers of Ebonics, and he has also used "black
English" in his humor for years.

Next thing you will be telling us is an Italian can not tell a Irish joke
without being racists (or would that be nationalists).

Lighten up Gould, it doesn't make you a better person to be so PC.

Those who can not laugh at themselves, live a very boring life.

You're right, assuming that JimH is black.

JimH, if you're black then you were merely disrespecting your own
ethnicity and not that of someone else. My criticism would still be
warranted, but my comment less than accurate if you are black. We have
no information upon which to base an assumption that you are white, and
it isn't important either way.

I often laugh at myself. I'm frequently pretty ridiculous, as are we
all.

The problem with this "joke" is that it perpetuates a myth that black
people are unable to enunciate well. Look at Tim's comment in this
thread. Jesse Jackson is very well spoken, but Tim was quick to hang
this demeaning racial stereotype on Jackson. One of the classic
idiocies in life is assigning stereotypes to a member of one group or
another merely because you might disagree with that individual's
politics or philosophy. Mike Tyson may not speak as well, (at least to
the "white" ear), as Jesse Jackson but that has nothing to do with
race. There are enormous differences in speaking ability among members
of any race.

The fact that the joke relies on a racial stereotype as a substitute
for humor can be demonstrated by the response accusing Jesse Jackson of
speaking as Mike Tyson is alleged to speak. There is little these two
individuals have in common beyond their ethnicity.

Stereotypes are always stupid. Doesn't matter whether one says
*All*.......conservatives are mean, hard-heartred
*******s.......liberals are socialist traitors.......black people like
to eat fried chicken and watermelon.....white people have small body
parts and can't jump......etc, etc, etc, etc......when one defaults to
a single statement intended to include all the members of any group it
simply shows that the person knows little, or could care less, about
any individual members of the group.

And people think that Bush is a bad speaker.

Jesse uses phrases like "AX" for "ask"
and "Ed-a-casin" instead of education.....

BTW, did you ever watch much black rap or hip-hop videos? If not, you
should....Now theres a true lesson in proper vernacular and grammar.

....as evidenced by your standardized, stereotypical response to the joke.

This racist thread brought to you by wreck.boats :-(

Isn't this where we trot out the Chinese laundry jokes, or the tired
old saw about
telling a running back that the football is really a watermelon?

Will we ever get past dealing in racial stereotypes, or finding then
"amusing"?

Racist thread? It is a joke and nothing racist about it. The guy is punch
drunk and even if he were white he would talk like that.

Get a life Chuck................. and then a sense of humor.

"Nothing racist about it", and "even if he were white" in the same
paragraph. That HAS to be just about the most ignorant thing I've ever
read here!!!!!

So by saying (inferring) that Tyson is black, which he is, is an ignorant
statement Kevin?

I'm mixed race and find the joke racially offensive. Down here, only a black
person or a white racist would tell that kind of joke and it is ok for
ethnics to tell jokes on themselves. Because of the color of my skin I don't
tell many irish jokes unless they are very gentle.

I'm mixed race and find the joke racially offensive.

Ok, why? It's a joke about a person, not a nationality, race or
ethnic background - why should it be offensive? The fact that Mike
Tyson is black isn't relevant - it's about him as an individual,
nothing more, nothing less.

So did you find the Wacko Jacko jokes last night funny?

Down here, only a black person or a white racist would tell that
kind of joke and it is ok for ethnics to tell jokes on themselves.

So black persons and white racists are the same for telling the same
joke?

That's pretty unique.

Because of the color of my skin I don't tell many irish jokes unless
they are very gentle.

So in your mind, the color of your skin or ethnic heritage is
important in designing the proper joke - kind of like a designer joke?
Do you find Chris Rock offensive when he does black "humor"? How
about Robin Williams when he does the blind blues singer who is
obviously meant to be black and is, in fact, very stereotypical?

Tell me - am I black, white, yellow or mixed race - can you tell? Am
I Amerindian, Lithuanian, Corsican or Cape Verdian? Do you know? Can
you tell what will and won't offend me? Can you say with any sort of
definite evidence that I will be offended if you tell a joke about
short people having Napoleon complexes?

How would you go about telling a joke in this medium that was not
offensive if you don't rely on that element of truth which is in all
humor - the differences between peoples belief's, ethnicity and
character?

There is no such thing as a neutral joke. All the best jokes are told
with social, ethnic, color or lifestyle differences in mind - that is
what makes them funny and, in a kind of odd way, instructive.

Later,

Tom

Jesse Jackson is the most famous 'racial stereotypist' of all time.

**********f

If Jesse Jackson posts a joke that relies on a racial stereotype for
humor, I'll be sure to comment as well.
